I posted under DM forums, but nobody responded, so I thought I would try posting here.

I can't back up or sync my BB, and I'm afraid to add or update any apps. As soon as I open the Desktop Manager, the screen greys out and I get the following message with the problem details:

BLACKBERRY DESKTOP MANAGER HAS STOPPED WORKING

I'm running OS 4.6.1.231 on a BB 8900, and this first happened on DM version 4.6. I tried updating to DM 5.0, but the exact same thing happens.

I would try wiping the BB and doing a clean install of the OS, but I'm afraid I'll lose all the data on my handheld since the last backup (about two weeks ago).

Has anybody encountered this problem? Any ideas on how to resolve it?

    Thanks.

Never used Vista... right now I'm using XP... might get Windows 7 soon, but that's another story.

Try removing DM 4.6, and any other Blackberry software... reboot your PC... then download and install DM 4.6 from the link in my signature below (it's from RIM)... then give another try.

Didn't work. Same problem. I open DM, let it load, then connect my BB. The screen greys out and I get the same message. This is the latest log:

I'm thinking that the problem is with the software on the BB. I probably need to reload an OS, but I don't want to lose my data. Is there a way to backup my data without going through the DM?

Upgrade your OS using the Loader.exe... this will backup your device before it performs the upgrade.

This is not a handheld issue. Its your PC. Use a different PC to synch to confirm this.

When I try to upgrade the OS via the apploader.exe, the first step is connecting to the device, but it fails and I get a message saying "the desktop loader is unable to connect to the device". It does read all of the 3rd-party apps before that, though, so it is connecting to the device.

Nope. I just tried connecting to DM on another computer and it didn't work on that one either (Windows XP machine). I also tried loading a new OS on the BB from the new machine and it wouldn't connect through apploader either.

I think the software is corrupt on the BB. I'm getting the feeling that the only way to resolve this is to wipe the handheld and do a restore from a few weeks ago. I really don't want to lose two weeks of data, and have to load all my 3rd party apps on it again.

Any last ideas? Maybe there is a 3rd party app causing this?

Ok, you used a different computer, but did you use a different cable???

And you said you think the software is corrupt... did you use the same install file??? I said it before, and I'll say it again, download Desktop Manager from the link in MY SIGNATURE BELOW!!! That comes straight from RIM.

I've tried different cables. I also downloaded DM from your signature. I don't know what else to do.

Find someone with a Blackberry and a working cable and computer, and try it on their PC... if it does not work on their then you need a new Blackberry.
