The last official Desktop Software for BBOS devices (v7.1.0.41 bundle 42) identifies BlackBerry 9720 as "Unknown Device". The PIN is recognized but Backup and Restore buttons are grayed out:

BB Desktop Software v7.1.0.41 (Bundle 42)
    Installer: 710_b042_multilanguage.exe

Here is the unofficial solution to this problem:

    https://ht.transparency.tools/c.pozz...op/DeviceData/

    1) From the page shown above download the following 13 files:

    bb9610.png
    bb9720.png
    bbP9982.png
    classic.png
    leap.png
    p9983.png
    passport.png
    q5.png
    q10.png
    z3.png
    z10.png
    z30.png
    DeviceCharacteristics.xml

    2) Exit the Desktop Software (if it's running).

    3) Go to the directory where the Desktop Software is installed and look for DeviceData folder.

    a) backup DeviceCharacteristics.xml file to a custom backup directory (just in case).

    b) copy all files listed in #1 to DeviceData folder (overwrite DeviceCharacteristics.xml).

Now, when BlackBerry 9720 is connected to the computer it will be recognized by the Desktop Software:

In addition to the above, the Desktop Software can now also recognize BB10 devices. When you connect a BB10 phone its image will be displayed, followed after a few seconds by a message that BB10 BlackBerries are not supported:

One of the files on the list is for BB 9610. I couldn't find any information about this BlackBerry model anywhere.

Disclaimer: I am not the owner of the page with all the files, I just found it on Google.
