    They have different purposes. Whether you actually need both is up to you. If you don't like Link don't use it.

    Blend is "only display"... the device is "surfable"... the data remains on the device.
    Link is for saving data / backup and restore... there are several other ways to backup the data.

    You must imagine blend as being a mirror. Every thing is on the device. With USB or WiFi connection, you access the informations of the device on a computer or tablet that only displays the information, like an output device. So you can read the emails, look into the calendar (but not remember), use BBM and a little bit more. When you act in blend, the action is immediately done on the device.

    Link is a synchronisation and backup program that acts on the saved data: pictures, videos, documents and music/sound... as well as contacts, remember (saved as options???!!!) and device calendar.
