No. The company sets its year-end.

Which would still leave the current tax year as 2019 if they I'll reporting 2020 I have no information for the year 2019 therefore they will be subject to tax on the Year 2018 again for 2019 and it would be made or assumed that 2020 also applies to 2019 and both 2018 and 2020 can be combined for the year 2019 in the absence of correct information and double tax is payable.
This has really been enacted but the incorrect reporting of tax years can seriously jeopardize a company's position

BlackBerry is currently in their fiscal year 2020 - because it ends Feb 28, 2020.

BlackBerry has been doing this for years and years. Going back to its RIM days.

It's some financial/accounting thing that apparently a lot of publicly traded companies do. Has nothing to do with how individuals report things, or tax related.

My own private company has a fiscal year end date of Sep 30. I am in fiscal 2020 next month.

Any company can choose any fiscal year-end date they wish.

A lot to not understand in their report. The date isn't one of those.

    That part is interesting:

“ Other revenue is now comprised of service access fees. Service access fees were $5 million, down from $12 million or 58% year-over-year. Total handset device revenue was zero, down from $5 million or 100% year-over-year.

Both service access fees and handset device revenue were expected to decline given the continued wind down of these legacy businesses.”

Access fees = BIS + BES or just BlackBerry Internet Service?

I guess they mean handset revenue from BlackBerry devices that are sold by BlackBerry Limited like the Priv and Dtek 50/60.

Still very confusing because these devices have been discontinued more than a year ago. How did they generated $5 million from them in the first fiscal quarter??

Unless they mean devices sold by TCL and other licensees!.

    What do you think @conite?

This item is typically made up mostly from BBOS SAF.

Hard to say. I think it would be BIS as BES/UEM revenues appear to be posted as part of IoT.

Handset revenue was in previous year when probably just getting recognized as payment with the wind-down from any authorized resellers. In this year period, sales were zero as there wasn’t hardware anymore.

So do you think BlackBerry Limited has generated $5 millions from selling BBOS devices in June-July-August 2018?

    I couldn't believe that!

Not selling devices - collecting BIS revenue.

Over the last 6 quarters the revenues for BIS have gone: $16, $12, $9, $9, $7, and now $5 million.

That $5 million today was around $800 million back in BBOS' heyday.

    Oh, sorry.

That would have been mostly residual DTEK sales I assume.
