During CrackBerry podcast episode 114, Chris Umiastowski brought up the reality that it probably doesnt matter if BlackBerry unquestionably had the best devices and OS in the world, because it still wouldnt help them gain market share. The CrackBerry team engaged in this discussion a little but it deserves more attention and certainly makes for an interesting conversation.

Interesting how if a CrackBerry contributor points out if BlackBerry has the best devices and OS in the world that it still wouldn’t help them gain market share, that comment is acceptable. But if someone in the forums would make the same claim, they'd be branded a "troll".

Even the title of the article is misleadingly positive. The actual theme is more like "Would it make any difference even if..."

They are correct the best hardware and the best software still doesnt bring back customers. Its a combination of things. creating buzz, having a unique place in the market and a core user base. Obviously having a business model that creates profit helps. I think also being one step ahead. Offering things up before them are asked for . Staying socially relevant. Once people see you are just trying to hang in there and not offering up anything new you are done. Its fine to be in the game but if you are actually pushing for more and better then you end up getting pushed to the bottom of the pile. I think thats kind of what happened to blackberry. Its not really what they did its what they didnt do. They went to sleep for about 24 months and when they woke up it was over. I have to say this is a business where you can be the big cheese one day and a door matt the next. Just ask apple who was flying along without any real competition and got absolutely hammered for not offering up anything new. Then came samsung and they sort of did the same thing now its HTC and next year it will be someone else. Its an endless circle. Finding a big enough niche and some loyal customers is what it is all about.
