Reddit moderators protesting changes to the Reddit API that would effectively kill third-party apps have all but lost the battle amid user frustration, lack of commitment, and threats from the site leadership.

Also there is the old adage "You get what you pay for" which means if you pay nothing, you get nothing or if you pay something you can expect some service in return. Perhaps Reddit never returned a profit because the cost of freeloaders is greater than the revenue from ads. All this free stuff on the internet needs to be paid for somehow.

The ads on this forum are very annoying because they are inserted between posts to lower readability. I would gladly pay a small subscription fee if there were no ads.

So say you... but the facts show that few would pay a fee, especially now that we are near the end.

Many sites have ads which I tolerate because free does not mean without cost. But they are typically presented around the perimeter where they do not disrupt information in the center of the screen.

I really don't know.... as my ad blocker, blocks them all. I tend to avoid sites that force the use of Ads.

For anyone interested, RedReader (FOSS app available on F-Droid or github) is totally ad-free and an excellent 3rd party app. I use it on BB10 and android. Excellent app!

I have a mental ad attenuator where most ads are seen as fuzz but if something is interesting, I might switch focus. Lately I have been checking the reddit r/dumbphones where there is daily activity. There are inline ads but they appear as small inserts easily skipped.

Reddit, compared to Crackberry, is not a good place to have phone forums because a subreddit is like a single thread which cannot be divided into topics. A few people have called for sticky posts to deal with the stream of repeat questions but these posts get buried in the stream of trivial posts. A few good posts about how to do something on a certain phone are also lost unfortunately. I (user komiter) wrote a few about how to do efficient texting because there are frequent complaints about the could-be-better HMD-Nokia phones.

I find the press-buttons on HMD-Nokia phones are too big. The MP02 is about 25% smaller and is better for texting or dialing. The user guide for the 2780 flip which I have has nothing about texting. This leads to more complaints and sour deals because using Predictive mode is not intuitive, but it is easy to understand when explained.

Now that Blackberry and Nokia (Pre-HMD) have left the phone scene, someone needs to step up and eliminate the so-called dumbphones. They need to evolve into some kind of smartphone-lite with good basic usability and security.

Problem is that's what you want... it's not going to happen, unless it's what enough of market wants.

I think the market for dumbphones... tends to be people that don't want to spend much more than $50 on the hardware. And in the US market tends to skew older, so big buttons fits much for that market. And those phones don't hold much user data, so security isn't a big ask from those users. And texting just isn't a big something those users do a lot.

100% I half expected to see some KaiOS PKB phones (Nokia or TCL) once BBMo pulled the plug on their deal with BlackBerry. One was released down in Mexico, but only a 3G phone that was sold in some connivence stores.

Evolve? Isn't that how we got smartphones? What you really want is someone to offer a smartphone with a PKB.

Reddit is far easier to use like old style forums here.

All the Twitter and similar type sites have been co-opted into way too much drama and censorship. Throw in the various ownership structures and free speech is being destroyed from all sides.

No, what I really want is a ban on touchscreens so that screens can be a bit smaller with some room for a PKB. I am wired for QWERTY but I can adapt to some ideal key arrangement no problem.

Strange how third party reddit apps for IOS (Apollo) shuts down but the ones for BB10 still work

I personally use, "Reddit in Motion" for BB10, it works really well to see comments but sometimes iffy on loading pictures but surprisingly I can view videos..

I just downloaded RedReader so I'll have to check it out, thanks!

RedReader wins by a mile imo, especially on a Passport (which is a bit more powerful than other BB10 devices). The reason it still works while other 3rd party apps have been shut down is that it has found an exemption: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedReader/c...noncommercial/

I've been using it for years as it's updated regularly and ad-free.
