I went to a local phone retailer looking for a second SD card. The largest card they had in stock at the time was 16 GB. I was looking for 64, I explain that to the guy at the store and he told me that a 64 GB SD card will slow my phone down and make it heat up.

I have had a 64 GB SD card installed in both my z10 and my z30 since pretty much day one. I have never noticed unusual heat from either device.

Is there a performance issue with these devices using larger SD cards?

Not particularly, no. Keep your device updated and use exFAT for larger cards and you should be fine.

The 16gb card is quite ancient now, and as he didn't have anything larger, maybe he needed to shift his stock of these relatively low capacity cards.

I think he was probably spinning you a yarn to just get you to buy one.

What dangerousfen said. Been using a 64 gb card for a while now. No issues at all. Love the extra music storage.

Thanks everyone, that was my suspicion based on my experience so far, I was mainly just curious if I was missing out on some performance since I have always had a 64 gig card installed in both my phones.

SanDisk Ultra...class 10 64GB sd card in my Z30 since November. Had it in my Z10 before that, also with out any problems.
It's fast and neither device had/has any heat issue.
My son still uses the Z10 with the same 64 GB card and has never had a problem.

I have this same type of card and have not noticed any huge delay or heat issues.
The ultra is also for higher speed capacity, that's why I went with it so it shouldn't have lags recording videos
