Now comes the difficult part. The condition of purchase. Once delivered, the box goes directly to my wife where, I will not see it, use it or touch it, until I unwrap it on Christmas Day. This leads to another conundrum in itself...
Should I open the box and test the Z30 prior to handing it to the wife to make sure it works and there's no problems? But once I open the box and power it on, I know there is no way I will want to box it up again. What do I do?!?!?!

I hate to be... what's the term... a wet blanket? but only because I was unlucky enough to have two defective Z30's back-to-back (one with non working touchscreen, second with bad battery), that I would recommend checking it out within your return window.
Now to be clear, I have not read any posts on the forums about hardware issues so you probably have a 99.9% chance of having no issues. I must have pissed someone off for some reason or such giving me some bad karma that I got bad units. And since, at least in Canada, you could probably get a brand new unit through warranty exchange through your carrier, there would be less reason for concern.
Still, I know only because of my experience that I would want to check it out. Up to you though. I don't want to remove that feeling of getting something to play with on Christmas morning :-) And if you have a venue to return it if you do have issues 6 weeks from now, then keep it in the box. But if you will be screwed 6 weeks from now with a bad unit then I would say check it out... or have someone else check it out for you to confirm it is fine and then box it back up. That way you have the confidence of no worries and that 'yippee' feeling on the 25th.
My two cents.
