You don't think you realize how PPI works. You don't see the difference between 1080p and 720p on a 55" LED TV because you are sitting 10 feet away. On a phone that you hold 6-12" away, you can absolutely tell the difference. PPI is a function of viewing distance, not screen size.
Actually it is a combination of both. But lets just say, outside of Apple & Motorola a 1080p display is standard for flash ship phones coming out these days.

you can absolutely see the difference, even on a 5" screen: CarltonBale.com 1080p Does Matter – Here’s When (Screen Size vs. Viewing Distance vs. Resolution). If I remember correctly the distance on a 5" display where you can start to notice the difference is about 12 inches.
That only goes down to 20 inches and even then they mostly converge at 3ft. Extend the graph further and it will be less than 12" to see difference. My eyes work, if you need closer than 12" means something wrong with your eyes.

    Diminished returns.

There...fixed it for you. Sure as hell people can tell the difference between 295 ppi and 330 ppi. Hell I can tell the difference between my wife's GS3 (306 ppi) and my iPhone (326 ppi).
The gs3 screen was crap, they used a different technology. Rgb, tft, pentile etc..all produce different viewing experiences even at the same ppi and screen size.

    No.

PPI is simply a function of how many pixels there are in a given inch. It is just a pixel density measurement.

As screen size grows but resolution remains constant, pixel density decreases.

We tend to view screens from consistent distances. Generally, 2.5x screen width. Some people like to get closer and some people like it farther.

Most people who think the difference is obvious have no idea how small the pixels are on these size screens.
