I have never owned this phone. I am currently using a blackberry leap as my daily driver and a classic as my backup . Is this a good deal for this phone in 2017? I don't use apps. And I have the android version of whatsapp running. I don't have any experience with the Z30 so I'm just looking for some advice.

    Cheers

Also the phone is locked to Rogers. I am a bell customer. If I take this phone to Rogers will they unlock it for free even though I'm not a Rogers customer?

Can't help with the UNlock issue.

The Z30 was a very nice phone. I liked it. Since you don't use Apps it might serve you well. I still have mine feeding BLEND to my various computers. So it has been used for that purpose for more than a year (two??) since it was otherwise retired. I have had to have its battery replaced twice.

I really don't know about the Leap but I think the Z30 was, at one time, top of the line. My Verizon model even has wireless charging.

How does wireless charging work on the z30 that sounds awesome

It works well but I think that ONLY Verizon offered that option.

Also, the cell phone repair shop I had the battery replaced suggested that CONTINUOUS charging might not be good for the battery. Mine sits continously on the wireless charging pad.

    Apparently they will.

"Rogers, Telus and Freedom Mobile all told CBC News they will now unlock all phones locked to their network, free of charge, for any individual or small business — as long as the phone isn't flagged as lost or stolen. "

Agreed! I purchased a Z30 for $80 not too long ago and it's a very good companion to my Q10.

It'd be hard to find a decent Bluetooth speaker that rivals the sound of the Z30... not to mention everything else that it is still very capable of!

$40 is a great deal. If missing apps is not an issue - perfect daily driver.

    Buy it for $40.

I would think that both phones are similar in function, but z30 has more features and better speakers. I don't have any experience with the Leap, but my 3 year old z30 has had zero issues and has great reception in low cellular signal areas. (paratek antenna) .

Technically Z30 is better phone unless you're on AT&T. The factory unlocked is missing some AT&T bands primarily used for LTE in most parts of USA.

I bought the Leap as improvement over Z30 just for AT&T LTE service.

Duly noted on the limited AT&T LTE bands issue with the z30. With Rogers and Bell noted, it sounds like the OP is from Canada where this problem shouldn't arise.

Ya there was a lot of upset z30 users when the leap came out..they were looking for a high end all touch and basically BlackBerry released a downgrade from the z30

Definitely an upgrade to the Leap. A relative of mine had the Z30 while I was still on the Z10. I just shortly upgraded to the Z30 (imho it was only a upgrad to the battery) and he now has a Leap.... Well, I feel kind of sorry for him XD

I still love my Z30 after a recent security wipe for lagginess. I miss the replaceable battery of the Z10, but the duration is still better. The Z10 also IMO has a better/brighter screen. I also paid around $40 last year for my one, very happy that I did so. Get an Amzer case and a glass screen protector and you'll be set.

If it's in good shape yes definitely get it, you will have to ask the carrier it's locked to for unlocking it.
Z30> leap I have had both and the z30 is much better for sure.

And for the person who has the issue with the batteries having to be replaced I have a original z30 from when it came out, it is worked to death every day and I have zero issue with the battery. You are definitely frying it with leaving it on the charging pad all the time.

RE: using it on AT&T. Depends on where you are. It's been covered here in the forums in-depth; in some areas you can get 4G LTE with a Z30 (STA100-5) on AT&T. I was able to. It started out in limited areas of Houston TX but seemed to spread, which I don't completely understand..
