My Z30 will be here tomorrow and I want to make sure I can swap from my Z10 smoothly.
From what I have gathered, since Im on 10.2.1.1055 on my Z10, I will need to load 1055 on my Z30 before I can make the backup transfer work..
Does that sound right? Once I DL 1055 on my Z30, can I do that transfer on BB Link?

Yes, you are correct on both counts.
I found out firsthand that Link won't transfer to a lower OS.
Upgrade the Z30 first to 1055 and you should be golden.
If your loading 1055 do not back from link it will more than likely cause you problems. Set up like new.

Then what is the best way to get my contacts and items saved on device, over? Move everything to SD?

You could try using Firechest Backup, it saves contacts, pictures, downloads and a couple more to your dropbox cloud and you can even encrypt it if you want

The contact is contactx in app world it saves to your s/d card and work great. All I ever use.

I have to say, using the latest version of Link I've been able to restore from backups for everything pretty successfully.
My experience may not be typical, but Link is miles better than it was originally.
Just realized I can copy my contacts to my Sim, Move all photos to SD.
Sim and SD go from Z10 to Z30...pow pow pow...in business!

That is what I did recently coming from a 9850 to a Z10. Worked without any issues. I like having my contacts on my sim card. I look at it as an extra layer of protection, should anything happen. Plus you can pop it in a new phone and be good to go

I made the jump to the z30, and decided to start from a clean slate.
However, I looked at all data I would need to transfer over, and what I could live without.
Contacts, calendar, I made sure I had that info in any one of my accounts, or on my PC outlook - no need to worry there as all syncing would do the trick.
Notes, memos, flags, all in remember app, that I made sure was synced with evernote.
App data? I can live without my top score on games, and all of the apps that need a password are in password keeper.
Password keeper... that one was not fun, I manually re-entered them, though I hear there is a beta that allows you to export the data.
Music, pics, vids, all on SD or backed up through box.
Now I am certain that no weirdness will persist and haunt me and my z30 :)
That's my low tech story.

Related question.. Is there a way to backup BBM conversations... That is something that has been holding me back for a while to get an upgrade..

In the BBM settings you can keep all convo's it back them up to your SD card.

I put my simcard into my z30 and considered my switchover as done. Not finesse just brute force switchover.
For now, I'm carrying two phones. On my z10 I have everything sync ed to Box. I did a BlackBerry Link backup too.

I just ended up restoring everything so I didn't lose game progress, plus a lot of local personal info like Calendar, Contacts, and Word Substitution.
I've found that sim contacts led to other Contacts bugs, but granted that was in earlier BB10 builds, circa 10.0.9 or 10.0.10.

Restoring from Link, I also noticed my contacts go somewhat psychotic? On my Z10.
For my 30 I restored via FireChest and my contacts have been great! Granted I had to relink one or 2 but the contacts moved over so quickly and simply, it didn't bother me.
As well as everything else imported over.
Not gonna help for game progress or word subs tho

I tired the sim card method of transferring contacts but it hasn't worked, not completely.
It kept saying "some contact info won't be transfered"

As far as I know, the 'Name' and 'Number' fields are the only information saved by the SIM. No email address, no photo, no work mobile number, and so on.
