I've noticed especially when taking closeups the focus is questionable. Have to retake the photos a few times.
Also have this problem shooting regular photos inside.
Bright outside shots seem to be fine.

Are you with 10.2.1.xx leak ?
Noticed it under certain circumstances. Yet, if you don't move, you'll see that the green frame will appear just when the pic is taken.
edit: In fact it will even prevent the pic to be taken before green frame
I'm not on a leak.

Sorry for this simple-but-not-that-stupid question : is your camera lens clean ? (no finger "grease" to be more specific)
I've noticed the same thing on my Z30 and Z10... it sometimes takes a few tries to get the camera to focus close up... Z30STA100-2/10.2.0.1809

LOL my phone is immaculately clean. I clean it daily.

I have the official verizon os and yes the focus does take a few seconds for me. Even when im taking a regular picture not a close up. It could be quite annoying

CB10. BlackBerry Z10
I'm having the same issue with my z30 and I'm on the 10.2.1.1925 leak! I even tried flashing the camera bar file from the previous 10.2.1 leak to no avail. Pretty frustrating but I noticed the focus acts up more indoors than out.

I'm on 10.2.0.429 and it also has serious issues with the auto focus. Embarrassing really.

This is most unfortunate as I am really trying to use just this BlackBerry z30 for ALL my mobile needs
Promising hardware but there are kinks BlackBerry needs to address asap

Sometimes I find the auto focus a hit and miss sometimes. I'd like it if as the camera app is opening, the camera is beginning to focus so you can take a picture quicker. Or when your accessing the camera from the lock screen, as your holding down the camera button loading the camera the camera is already being focused.
Greetings, this questionable focus plagues all BB10 devices, at least the (former) flagships, since they're all using the same camera modules. I've noticed this on my Q10 and people owning a Z10 complained about similar issues when it comes to convenient focusing of an image. I don't know why the Z30 on the latest official OS should be different, since it uses the same camera components and the same software.
The Q5 might be different, but I don't really think this is a hardware related issue.
I've heard there are plans to improve focusing in future updates, I am not using the 10.2.1 leaks, so I can't comment whether there's an improvement already or not. But it's really needed, this 8MP module is quite decent, especially in daylight, yet that insecure focusing is causing trouble.

Have you tried to manually focus ? (i.e drag the focus frame to the area you want to focus on)
This is what I do for almost any shot, as it allows both focus and light balance. Probably why I'm not ennoyed / didn't notice that much focus problems.
For many lighting situations auto focus on any camera is not useful. I agree with the last note, resort to manual. If picture is really important take lots of shots...the beauty of digital is that there is no wasted film.

Same issue here....
Z10/Q10/Z30
mostly my camera has problems focus when my filthy fingers making the lens dirty it was the same with my samsung mobile a year ago.
I do not believe you are manually focusing. You are selecting your target area for white balance.
Edit: Never mind. I believe that box selects both - the area for focus and for white balance, but of course it is still using auto focus - you are just telling it where.
99% the edit ;) it's not white balance but light level (ie: you can use it if you want to get rid of "against the light" situations)
I've noticed poor auto focus when trying to take pictures of documents or bar codes with the 1925 Leak. It's like it starts too far out of focus then comes halfway to focus then stops out of focus. I don't recall this problem on official 10.2
