it is a magnesium alloy, very similar to the finish on the new surface 2

I don't think it's magnesium alloy. That alloy was used on the Z10, however the Z30 appears to be using a relatively poorly painted piece of plastic.

    I don't remember where I read that but that's a magnesium alloy.

Mine is cool to the touch like the alloy, definitely wouldn't say cheap plastic. Do you have one, I'm surprised you think that?

I suspect to match some of the plastic bits that some of the buttons might be. Also the paint might be more resistance to everyday scratching, than the raw alloy.

Used two of them, both felt like plastic, but that could be the paint. At least one review showed the paint peeling as well, exposing what appeared to be plastic, though they were not 100% sure. I'm also just going based on what I observed. I'm not saying I'm right.

LOL yeh because they know everything dont they??.

Anyhow to me it looks like some sort of alloy rather than plastic, ive tapped on it a few times and it seems pretty solid...has a different sound to plastic which my s3 has. But meh who really cares other than the OP, its beautiful to hold and look at.
