Sound so simple but to me they are both kind of the same as they allow one to connect to data wirelessly no?

Mobile hotspot: multiple devices can connect to your hotspot through Wifi. They then get access to the internet through your mobile data connection.

Tethering: a single device can connect to your device through Bluetooth or USB connection. It can then get access to the internet through your Wifi (I think?) or mobile data connection.

Mobile hot spot through a wifi connection setup on phone. Tethering via blue tooth or USB

Without Googling, I think this is the difference.

If the intent is to provide/share wireless connectivity, why have two almost similar ways to do it?

Correct me but can't we do everything via mobile hotspot?

Mobile hotspot uses Wifi to connect to other devices, so you can only share your mobile data speed and the other device must have a Wifi card.

Tethering can be done with devices that do not have a Wifi card. And you can share your own Wifi instead of mobile data, getting higher speeds.

It all depends on what type of device you are connecting.

    BlackBerry 10 signed.

Oh I see. Does this mean if I make use of tethering and my phone is connected to the Internet via wifi, I can share that connection with another device using blue tooth? That's neat

By better do you mean it uses less battery power?

That is the way I understand it, but I am not sure. It is basically what the BlackBerry Bridge app does for the Playbook (if you have ever used one of those), it uses the Wifi the connection of your smartphone if available, or else mobile data.

Neither hotspot nor tethering work with Wifi alone. Says you need to turn on data to enable. At least with a STA100-5.

Mobile Hotspot makes your phone behave sort of like a router. Internet Tethering is just one decide using your phone as just a modem.

    Thanks. This clears it up.

I almost only share with one device so I will use Internet tethering to save my battery life.
