Let me start with some back story.

I'm in sales, I drive around all day from customer to customer. I also live in Canada where we have a ton of snow. Needless to say with all the reflection off the snow and usual sunny days in the summer, a good pair of sunglasses is a necessity. Years ago I made the switch to polarized lenses, and man what a difference.

So I just got my z30 yesterday and noticed some thing interesting compared to the z10.

When in wearing my polarized sunglasses, the oled screen of the z30 becomes a bit distorted. Not enough that it becomes unusable. But if I tilt my head to the side I get a cool color show and if I do it just right I can make the entire screen disappear lol.

Nothing majorly wrong here....just thought I'd toss out my findings

Here are a couple shots I took with the z10

    No polarized glasses

A weird thing to note about the z30 screen.-img_20140212_120532.jpg

Yes... the screen has a polarizing layer in its structure. From memory it actually works by rotating the plane of polarization as the light passes through the active layer, so light either passes or does not pass the upper polarizer. You'll also get some color patterns from some plastics when they are placed under stress and viewed with a polarizer - like the pressure from the clamp, or different temperatures across the screen.

That's kind of a design fail.

It just means that your glasses are filtering certain wavelengths (colours), and those wavelengths happen to have the same polarization as your glasses, not a design flaw, cool though.

Yeah, it is the same on the iPhone 4S. I find it wildly entertaining through my polarised glasses.

    Mmm...CB10! Just the tip though...

Yep, LED, OLED, LCD.....these all experience the same issues, its quite common.

Not at all, it's a constraint of the available technology.

I never had this with the z10 or my BlackBerry os devices.

But I notice it all the time on screens on things like bank machines, gas pumps, debit machines.

You can also see it in rear windshields of some vehicles.

Like I said not complaining.....just thought I'd share a neat finding

Neat! Probably annoying for you though lol
My sunglasses don't do that to mine but I get that same effect with my window tint. Fortunately it's not that severe!

Just wanted to drop an update.

I accidentally dropped my phone this weekend and the fall left a nice sized tear in the screen protector.

I never actually removed the factory screen protector when I got the phone. I simply put it in the otter box when I first got the device.

Well I removed the damaged screen protector and low and behold the glare issues with the polarized lenses is gone.

Seems the problem was with the screen protector and not the amoled screen.

Just wanted to share my stupidity!
