It's day 5 with my Z30 after a recent move from my old Z10 and Q10 (and every BB device before that). Loving it so far, i thought the Q10's battery was superb but this one just takes it to a whole new level.

Anyway my one and only minor issue so far was that it didn't share the same sturdy side keys as the old BB models... even the Q10 and the Z10 had solid side keys but as solid as everything feels on the Z30, the side keys were a bit loose and flimsy. I'm a bit ocd about them and i hate the mild rattle when device is moved, i hate it when i feel the buttons move loosly when i rub my fingers against them and also the frequent accidental presses when pulling out the device from my pocket. I thought it somewhat felt cheap and unusual given its predecessors solid side keys.

While some might find this stupid and shallow, i'm sure i am not alone with this gripe so if you have a Z30 with loose side keys and it bothers you enough, just open up the battery cover and put some tape on the underside of the keys with enough tape to connect it to the body of the case. This will stop it from moving around and rattling while giving it a better tactile feel against accidental presses. I believe some black electrical tape would be perfect but i didn't have any yet so i just used magic tape for now and it works well.

Simplest fix for those flimsy Z30 side keys-img_4654.jpg

When the battery cover is back on it shows no signs of the slight mod but the mission is accomplished - the side keys are now stable and held properly while also helping it against being pressed too easily.

By the way, the Z30 is my first BB since the old 8700 days where i didn't have to pad the battery cover (no more loose doors) lol!

    Thanks for reading

This is exactly what I did also to fix the moving keys, it is invisible when you put the backdoor and the Z30 feels much more solid like this. Thanks for sharing the info with pics ;-)

sorry to hear about that. not sure about the q10 coz my old one was fine..i assume the same can be done but the challenge is opening the back to gain access and risk voiding warranty. tough one mate

My volume keys were food but the middle button was horribly sensitive.

I used the trick and applied a piece of removable tape. Two pieces was too thick. Kept the Centre button depressed.

One layer was perfect. Stiffened up the button enough so i wasn't always tripping voice command.

i don't think there's a real fix for the way it is designed. On the z30 the side keys pop out more than the previous z10 anf Q10 models so I'm not too sure what the service center can do about it. If they can't do anything maybe try the tape method...it won't lower the keys but it will tighten up against being too sensitive to very light presses

I took all my take out and left it. My middle button was the issue. It was too 'sensitive' for my liking. The take made it worse as it kept it pushed closer to the button below.

As far as I know, no. But this definitely is an issue more than not as I've seen it mentioned on here more than a few times. Tape method seems to be the way to go, and thanks OP for sharing!

Thanks guys. I'm using the tape method for now. Will go thru some road test if it's good enough for me to avoid service centre and get my data all wipe out again.

It's the design of the phone... the way the back cover seals against the buttons... it's different from the other BlackBerry 10 devices so all Z30's have "lose" keys...

I'd take it back until they get one that isn't like that or they repair it properly.

The keys on mine are not too sensitive nor are they loose by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe it has been addressed by blackberry now?

Not "all"... mine are nice and stiff... no problem here aside from the generalization about "all" of them being loose.

The keys aren't necessarily loose but they sure do press easy. I hate it when my music all of a sudden plays when the phone is in my pocket. I have the pocket pouch but for some reason they didn't make it cover the up volume key and the middle mute one.

I have the simple gel case from Telus.
My keys are not one percent loose or flimsy with the case on, the keys are actually quite stiff to use.
