Hey everyone.. Just in case this hasn't been made available yet, as a developer we were given information concerning screen resolutions for all future devices. It confirms the resolution of 1280*720 for the upcoming A10 and any new devices.

    Cheers!

Is this really mean that bbry is not gonna catch up the 1080p resolution and once again leaving their stuff behind the up to date smartphones?

You are overstating the situation in the subject of this topic, they do not state all future devices and personally I would expect them to move beyond 720p or 720x720 for all premium models in 2014 even while they keep them for lower to mid tier products.

Since they're trying to release the A10 this year, you can bet that it will be 720p and that BB will try to sell it as a high end device. It doesn't stand a chance against something like the G2, but they will still try...

Maybe people should wait until BlackBerry have released the phone before critising or judging how well it will do????

It does not take a crystal ball to predict that a phone that is rumored to have a 720P screen resolution, last years Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro chip (as in not a 600 or 800) and either an 8MP or 12MP camera isn't going to stand out in Q4 of this year.

There's just a growing segment that is tired of saying each new phone is "...the best BlackBerry to date" to justify that it isn't even in the same league as current top end smartphones.

Even Windows Phone is going to support higher resolutions in the next update and part of what's held Windows Phone back to date is the tight hardware restrictions that have led to it staying behind the pack in the high end.

We all want BlackBerry to make a comeback, but going slower then the competition and repeating other platforms mistakes about hardware are not likely to make as Frank put it (paraphrasing) 'the greatest comeback in Tech history"

You know I couldn't tell you what processor is in my Z10. All I can tell you us that it is as fast as anything else I've seen.

They are making the aspect ratio standard, not the number of pixels.... This will allow for scaling on the newer phones with higher resolutions / larger screens.

You haven't programmed for a BB10 device have you? There is no scaling per say. Pixels are relevant, not aspect ratio. And in any case scaling images uses more gpu processing power and will hence use more power.

Yup, most people don't realize that a 5" 1080 and 5" 720 screen using the same technology, that people with 20/20 vision cannot see any difference.

As a programmer, does the fact that you don't have to program for a third resolution make you happy, sad or indifferent?

As a programmer, you do still have to.

    720x720 (Q series)
    720x1280 (future devices)
    768x1280 (L series)

Not if you force your future device apps to be portrait only. And I force my Z10 apps to be portrait only and pad the sides of my apps with 24 pixels as instructed by BB developer documentation. Then it makes development simple.

The resolutions have been set BBJAM started rolling out. that was the time of the Dev Alpha A. time to move on guys. if 1080p was being supported in any timeframe, Dev Relations would update the site and inform devs of the upcoming change MONTHS in advance

It won't have 1080p. Get over it. As long as the ppi are sufficient, no one is going to complain. Most people don't know the resolution of their phone anyway. Just market it as HD and they won't care.

Exactly my thoughts. As long as they market it as HD people won't care. As a developer I'm happy that the are finally standardizing their display aspect ratio. As a consumer, you should also be happy. This will ensure that all apps will be available on your device.

Ya ya 1280p.. end of the day, I want a device that is performant, that also has the apps that I use and has good battery life. I don't want some overly gimmicky android that sells only due to their ridiculous specs. As a developer, I know that the architecture of the system allows for regular normal spec'd devices to still perform as well as those crazy spec'd androids.

Funny I never saw any official specs. Since you have the offical specs please share.

There is last years leak of specs and this years. This years is updated to a Snapdragon 600 or 800 series chip 4gb of ram and 1080 screen. The screen isnt a big deal as people can't tell the difference with the naked eye on smartphone size screen.

I suppose it is a 'checkbox' item, but I kind of view this like people getting all hot and bothered about the number of megapixels in their camera and then only post photos to Facebook ... or people that crow about their bajillion core processor phone but can't produce an app that makes use of the cores to demonstrate the next wave in computing.

Well - people will complain, but I bet if you did a 'blind test' and asked people to tell you which was 1080p and which wasn't, most wouldn't have a clue because their (non) hawk eyes wouldn't perceive the difference.

Actually that could be an amazing marketing idea.. kind of what Microsoft did with their Windows Mojave Experiment.
