It's all marketing mumbo jumbo, at least to me. Yes I think they need to have it because everyone else does.
For me looking at 720p along side of 1080p I can't really tell a difference, I assume others can but I can not.
qHD 960x540 = QuarterHD
QHD 2560x1440 = QuadHD
I wouldn't say LG's is inferior to 1080p....
There's no such thing as QHD or it's the same as qHD.
There is "2.5K" which sometimes also dubbed as "quad HD" - mostly by the clueless corporate press crowd, every tech person calls it 2.5K - but it's written as it is, no acronym (because it's taken by 950x540 already.)
Wikipedia disagrees.
Graphics display resolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikipedia cannot agree or disagree but sure - do you want me to edit it out in 5 seconds? :)
If ya feel ya jus need to win then knock ya self out lol. End of day it's over 500dpi. That's insane.

Remind me to ask you to spot the difference between a 720p screen and a 1440p screen on a 5" device once it comes out.
Also, didn't Apple won the built-in MSAA war with Retina display?

Remind me to tell you to seek professional medical help if you cannot see the difference between 720p and 1080p especially side-by-side...
...people repeat so much dumb stuff they hear from others, without thinking first, it's amazing.
So you will leave millions of sales to someone else because you don't want to code from the start in different resolutions? How many million android devices don't have 1080P? My bet is millions and millions.
*snicker*
You say "720p and 1080p side by side", at what size?
80 inch? Of course
3 inch? You have better chance interpreting nostradamus

And again, the clueless-yet-loudmouthed troupe is marching on...

Like you? Who mindlessly try to use "didn't keep promise" as "evidence"? No court of law will accept "maybe" as evidence you know
Well go ahead and find two 5" devices, one 720p and another 1080p. Photograph them and post them here, so people can see the difference.
If they can

Why all the discussion? If you read thru the developers toolkits from BlackBerry it gives you all the tools to make your app display properly on all devices and encourage you to use 1080p resolution for the future generations.
There are complete how to guides for Natives & Cascades apps as well as WebWorks for HTML5

If I recall my ophthalmology lectures; one's ability to see fine definition is dependent on the cone density in the fovea of the retina. At normal reading distance for a small screen, say you won't be able to tell the difference. I just did it comparing an S4 with an S4 mini.
Ultimately if you wanted to prove the hypothesis beyond doubt, one would have to do a randomised double blind trial asking subjects to see if they can tell the difference.
