Starting off with a little rant....
So I ordered a hot chocolate today with whipped cream on...no marshmallows and the stupid waitress put marshmallows on! So there is was fishing it all out whilst my z30 was on the table, it was overfilled as it was as well and it splashed all over my phone, not that much probably like a tea spoon, plus it didn't taste nice as well didn't bother finishing it up. So I cleaned it up and stuff and everything was working fine, now this was until I just finished uni. I went to ring my friend and she couldn't hear a word I was saying, I did a voice note and it's official.. the mic is truly bust. I'll do a bbve test when I get home, but I really don't want to send my phone in for repair because I know I can do it myself, plus I bought this second hand from eBay, brand new though, so not sure.. is the mic truly bust from a little bit of hot chocolate, which wasn't even that hot at all?!

Worst of all I dropped my phone yesterday, I managed to save it with my foot from about 3 inches from the ground but it still hit the tarmac and left a little scuff on the bottom corner what will happen tomorrow?

Oh and the z30 has stereo speakers as well right? One at the top and one at the bottom? Is there a way where I can just test the bottom speaker?

Could be the hot chocolate shorted out the mic, OR it broke in the fall. You are probably too late for this, BUT you can try cleaning it out with pure alcohol, or distilled water, and THEN letting it fully dry. It sucks that it's a Z30 and you can't remove the battery to do this, BUT you can and should power off the device. Using as little liquid as possible, use a q-tip and clean the device with the alcohol or distilled water, it MUST be pure alcohol or distilled water, regular stuff would do! THEN after will the device still off, wait 24 to 48 hours for it to dry with the device in a bowl of either silica gel packs or dry uncooked rice, this will draw out any and all remaining moisture.

Of course if the mic got damaged in the fall, or if you used the device for too long with moisture inside, you will need to have it repaired or replaced.

If you're planning to spray the microphone with alcohol, I'd be inclined to strip the phone down before you do. The microphone is directly under the display, and the opening is extremely narrow, making it an awkward job.

    Good luck though!

It wouldn't have broke with the fall as it was working Saturday night/throughout Sunday. I've been using it all day and didn't think it needed the rice treatment. I was just thinking to open it up and get a new one and replace it instead. What's the best thing I can do?

The weird thing is I did a voice recording and that worked but I called 3 different people and they couldn't hear me

If a voice recording worked then the microphone is fine, it could be related to a network issue if they couldn't hear you. Do a BBVE test on the mic and be sure. Do you have another phone /friend nearby you can properly test this out with (i.e. In the same room)

With the luck that you have, I'd suggest looking both ways (twice) before crossing the street tomorrow.

Well I've just done a bbve test and the voice recording picked up and played back fine. Ok then what could it be? This only started today and I don't really use my phone much in regards of calling, but yesterday it was completely fine. When I finished uni I rang someone around 5 hours ago from the train stn where I have full 3g signal, couldn't hear a thing, I tried ringing my mum when I was outside the house and she was inside, I have h+ about 3 bars and she couldn't hear a thing, and then I rang a mate of mine now with 3 bars of 3g and he couldn't hear a thing. Well they all said it was very distorted in a way. Like it wasn't coming through properly. All 3 of them are on different networks, vodafone, 3 and o2. And I am on o2

I've seriously had a crap few days, dropped my phone for the first time, lost a tenner at OT yesterday, in which we played s*** and they scored a last minute equaliser after we were 1-0 down the whole game Nd then scored two quick goals towards the end. And now today this happens!

So the voice recording isn't distorted or quiet when you play it back? Sorry, just trying to rule out everything before you go cracking the back of that phone open

I understand that the thread is pretty old but still... in case someone has the same problem.

Several weeks ago I got some soapy water spill on my z30 screen. I removed it with a blanket and dried my phone. Right after that I got the mic problem.

After two weeks of search I found a solution:

There is a tiny narrow hole right under the screen which is in fact a microphone hole. It became closed by dried soap. So all I had to do is to clean this hole and voila - the microphone is working again.

Yeah. I would pull the phone apart and clean it with a q-tip and alcohol.

Disconnect any power source first and THEN engage the power button to release changes in anything that's like. Capacitor.

Dip the swab and clean the mic. Let it dry for a few hours (to be safe, rubbing alcohol evaps pretty fast in open dry air).

While it's apart, look to see if anything else got slimed.

Put it all together and hope it all works.

Hot chocolate has a lot if sugar and particles, makes it really conductive, AND will leave those sugars and particles behind when it dries.

The mic is like a tiny moving speaker.. if it's weighted down it would vibrate and pick up sound.

Otherwise... starts scanning ebay for spare parts and brush on some YouTube vids on soldering.

Good luck. I've done this with other phones/blackberries. I'm a layman, and it's doable. Either you'll fancy yourself an expert afterwards, or buying a new phone.

This thread points out how delicate phones can be with regard to fluids. Phones should be made to be resistant to water or other fluid exposure. I believe I read that the new GS5 has such a feature. Very useful.

Uberfacts reported the other day, with almost certain truth I bet, that 90% of phones sold in Japan are water-resistant.
