Z30 shows an error "This file contains an unsupported media format." every time I'm trying to play .mkv file.
The same files works just fine on Z10 with any version of firmware.

Does anyone have the same problem?

    Thanks.

If you change the extension file .mkv to .avi it should work!

Mkv is just a wrapper for a different file format inside.

You will always find inconsistencies in that some MKV files will be supported, and some won't.

    Right.

Than why Z10 plays all my .mkv files and Z30 only 2 of a few hundred?

The problem isn't the MKV format it is the audio. You need to convert the audio. There is a thread on here with the name of a good program to do that and step by step instructions. Just search a bit for it. If i can find it I'll post the link to the thread for you...

What the Z30 can't play is the AC3 encoded audio which is wrapped in most MKV files. In other words, this phone is pathetic for video playback. I just wish I realized this before I got rid of my Z10 and moved to the Z30. What use is Miracast when I can't play back jack all unless I recode the audio into pathetic 2-channel MP4. As I said in another thread in this topic, it seems BlackBerry can't do anything right. Apparently the few cents per device it costs them to license codec for AC3 is too much. I guess the large screen on the Z30 is not meant for multimedia consumption, rather for old folks to be able to see stuff better.

I was using handbrake in the days of Android, but for the last 10 month with Z10 I thought it is over so if find something good, please let me know.

    I have 2 files with AC3 which I can play on Z30.

It is a second day with Z30 and I feel like I made a mistake switching from Z10

Just do that search I mentioned above in the Z30 forum and that is the exact thread. For some reason I could copy the URL but it wouldn't let me paste it here(couldnt find the option to)

I'm in the same boat. I do have one idea though. If you can find an original OS release, 10.0 for the Z10, install that on the Z30, then upgrade to the latest leak, you may get the codec back.

You could also end up soft-bricking the device...so yeah, there is risk involved.

Tried it yesterday. Downgraded to original firmware, than to last official release.
    No luck there.

Z10 plays it perfect and doesn't care about version number with both 10.2.0 and last leaked 10.2.1

Yeah, if you look at my original thread discussing issues with the AC3 codec you will see that I now believe that the permission to use AC3 is granted based on the HW device ID at the time of programming. The variable in question is set in a file named "Settings" located in /pps/services/multimedia/renderer folder. On the Z30 and the Q10 the enable_ac3 variable is set to false.

Did you try to set to true?
Is there a way to set it after flashing?

It is not possible. To change this value you would need root access to the device which is basically impossible on a BlackBerry. The best bet would be to figure out how to modify the signed OS files to always return true, but as I said, the content is very obfuscated. Also, I think any modifications to the signed files will fail to flash due to hash mismatch. In other words, there really isn't a way to make this change for the end user.

OK this is interesting. As the OP discovered some media files that played on their Z10 don't play on the Z30.

However, when I bring up a media file [in my case an mpg file] and get the unsupported error message, I then go into the sub menu to the right [w/file still open] and select edit, the file plays.

    Download MX player from Snap.
Go to videos, press and hold on the video you want to watch, and open in MX player. (MX doesn't do a great job at searching for videos- even after you change the folder paths)

Actually for me none of the Android players work either. VLC worked once, hadn't worked since. Even did another OS reload, and a security wipe.

Well that sucks... my only other suggestion would be to do a full shutdown (hold the power button for a long time) give it a few minutes and turn it back on. Z30 should not have these issues- especially playback.
You could always try another mkv file and see if that works.

Wait for Kalemsoft Media Player. It plays mkv files just fine. Have been using it on my PlayBook since I got it. Am testing the beta version for the Z30 right now. It runs just fine, but there is a problem with using OTG USB. Other than that I think it's the best player out there.
