Lots of users do encrypt their SD card. Not for me.
I believe file retrieval may be slowed for decryption.

There is no visible loss in performance while retrieving files if using encryption (on my phone, at least).
Can someone explain exactly what this means? Because my phone got stolen a few weeks ago in Cuba. Now the phone had a password on it but that doesn't stop anyone from removing the SD card and seeing exactly what's on it. I think that if you have a password on your phone it should put the same password on the SD. So if someone inserts it into a computer it should ask for a password.

In order to prevent the files belonging to the SD Card to be read, you have to activate encryption for the SD Card. Otherwise the files can be read when the card is put into another card reader.
Settings > Security and Privacy > Encryption > Media Card Encryption
The downside is that if you want to read your own files in the same way (by taking the card from the phone and putting it into a card reader) you have to cancel Media Card Encryption before you take the card out of the phone.
Also, before reinstalling the OS (or when doing a security wipe) you have to make sure you cancel Media Card Encryption, otherwise those files will be lost for good.
Wiping delets the encryption key... So if you didn't backup the data, it's lost!

So in other words, the BlackBerry device holds the encryption password. So without the phone being in the same state as when you set the encryption than all data is lost as you cannot enter the password to decrypt when put into a computer..
So if you loose your phone and wipe it from online but then get the phone back and reinstall the OS your SD card will be useless.
That's what I understand anyways. I have only encrypted my device, I have yet to weigh if encrypting the SD is right for me.

Because you removed the SD card when updating the OS? If you leave the SD card in would it be fine? Or is it best to decrypt it then update the phone and the encrypt it again after...

Yes, I guess it is best to decrypt it before doing the update, just as a precaution in case something goes wrong with the update and an OS reinstall would be needed.
I agree with this... it took ages on my Bold... Just curious how long it takes on BB10, say for 32GB? I don't encrypt mine!

I left it in. Autoloader to update. Restored from back up. Filed previously encrypted on card were no longer available.
You have to decrypt before using an Autoloader to update OS because it removes the decrypt key from the phone.

I encrypted a 64 GB card in a few minutes. It wasn't anywhere near full, but didnt take long as I recall.

If you forgot to decrypt the SD card or somehow unsuccessful decrypt your card without your knowledge, your files now not accessible on the new device right? If this is the case and you no longer have access to the old device, what can you do to be able to use the SD card on the new device ?
I have tried to format the SD card on my device many many times but can't help, and did try to format my card on window 8.1 with extFAT file system, my window recognized the card stored music on it, but my device refused to let me store any thing on it or let me access the music on the card even though it recognized the card has something on it. Can someone one give me some suggestions? thanks.

Try formatting the card in your device, not in a computer via windows.
You already lost access to anything you had on the card.
In the settings - storage and access, it had formatted the card many times, but was surprised it took (less than a second to finish format a 64GB SD card) , but it still didn't recognize my SanDisk Extreme plus card, I had formatted in my device at least 10x and even restart my device but still no hope.
Here is the weir thing, if I format it in windows with extFAT and pop it into my device, then check the media details in the settings storage and access, it will give me the size of the card, fee space, storage size details... but that it, I won't be able to access the card such as taking photos and storage on the card.
Sometimes It would let me store some photos using camera app and storage on the SD card (I verified it in the more... properties) but it only accessible for a few days then suddenly it inaccessible showing the black screen with the tulip icon.
So what is the problem here, the SD card definitely accessible in windows, but not on my z30 with latest software update. Any one figure what going on here, definitely need some help, thanks for your time and input.

I am trying to unencrypt my 16gb media card... the card is completely full of photos, which I can't seem to upload to my computer through link.
It ran for 3 days straight, and bare got 15% complete. Plus it drained the battery of my Z10 in about 5hrs, so for 3days I could barely leave the office ... I was constantly tethered to an outlet. I finally gave up... looking forward another way to of load my photos.
So warning to those who encrypt - decrypting is a long process!!!
