    Hi,

my Z30 is a STA 100-2 (UK model) Unlocked . I need a clarification regarding using the phone abroad using a local sim. For instance if I wanted to use it in the US, getting a T-mobile sim card or AT&T, would I only get 3G speeds regardless I get a 4G sim card?

    thanks!

Correct. In the US, your STA100-2 will not get 4G (LTE.) At best, it will get HSPA+. Plus, given the network bands your STA100-2 has, I would recommend AT&T's network-using carriers over TMO, because the STA100-2 has all of AT&T's 3G/HSPA+ bands, but only 50% of TMO's 3G/HSPA+ bands.

For more STA100-2 compatibility information, check out the Z30 link in my signature.

    ok thank you.
when you say TMO only has 50% of the bands, what does it mean?
Last year I bought a T-Mobile sim (3G) and used it on my iPhone and no issues...

For 3G/HSPA+, TMO USA uses two bands: 1700 and 1900. 1900 is present in the STA100-2, but 1700 is not. 1700 is their main nationwide band, and 1900 is deployed in and around major cities (click on link and scroll down to the Re-farmed Cities section.) Your iPhone could therefore have worked because 1) it has both the 1900 and 1700 bands, 2) you were in refarmed cities, or both.

thank you for all the info.. I was in LA, so I guess I was in a “refarmed” city...
Just wish they made it easier and all carriers would use the same bands

One thing (only thing ) I admire Apple for from a hardware standpoint is that they pack so many network bands in one phone. BB traditionally has not done it to Apple's level, but they will with the Passport. And hopefully more phones beyond that.
