Ok so BBM advertises that you are able to do video chats, etc. and having gone thru help files and such I am still unable to see the video icon appear in my bbm chat or contacts or phone application - am I missing something or is it just me? I am running it on a z30 with the latest BBM version. Thanks in advance

The other party must be a BB owner at this point. Other OSs do not have the capability yet.
It only works from one BB10 device to another. You can still have BBM Voice to legacy BB's but not to Android or iOS. In the BBM app, do you have your settings so data will go over the network "Allow BBM calls over Mobile Networks"? (swipe down, tap the settings gear icon, scroll down to see if this is 'on' or 'off') Do you see a greyed-out icon of a video camera in the BBM chat (individual only)? If it will work it should be green. I've seen it go grey if the other person's or my connection is bad. And occasionally it will disappear altogether, although rarely. What is your carrier? (I have a Z10 and Q10 but it should be similar to the Z30. (OS 10.2.0.429 for the Q10 and 10.2.1.1055 for the Z10)
For video your contacts need a Z10, Q10, or Z30. I don't know if Q5 will work. You need to invite them which you can do from with BBM or from your contacts list.

Chatted with my sister on her Q5, so can confirm it works really well
