My wife is looking at z30. Blackberry.com says it has a non-removable battery. Verizon claims it does have one. I am leaning towards Blackberry being correct but could Verizon have a version that has a removable battery?

Also, is there or will there be a custom firmware that can be loaded to allow the Google Play store on this phone?

    Thank you,
    Brian

Greetings! The Z30 really has a non-removeable battery. While you can remove the backcover, the battery itself can't be removed.

You can load leaked software updates on the Z30, just like you can with all the other BB10 phones. Just make sure the leak supports your device. However there is no Google Play Store available. With the leaked 10.2.1 update however you can not only install .apk files straight from your devices file manager, you can even use native Android stores like Snap or install .apk of alternative Android app stores like Amazon.

First thank you for the quick reply. Why would Blackberry release the z30 without the option of a removable battery? That was one of my selling points on the z10. I myself being rather green to blackberry do you load the releases from your computer file manager or blackberry software?

Non removable battery has some advantages on the z30. First of all the battery lasts way longer on the z30, so you don't need to worry too much about it.
Advantage lies for example in design: non removable battery makes it possible to build it as slim as it is.
User mistakes like battery pull while update, reload or security wipe can not be made.
Also there can only be a certified battery in it, if you don't disassemble you device.
Also the battery will less likely loose connection and the back cover will not wear off, because there are less reasons to remove.

Of course it has downsides. But if you are on a trip there are external battery packs available, so you are able to do longer trips without a wall charger even with no spare battery.

Just chiming in on battery life and the non removable battery. I'm a moderate to heavy user on the Z30 and it's not necessary to have the removable option. Battery life is exceptional as well as the whole BB10 experience. Go for it!

Non-removable battery was my biggest concern when I was considering the Z30. But the battery lasts so long, I have no concerns anymore. I am a heavy user and I get at least 14 hours every day on my Z30.

My Z10 was half that or worse. I was always switching the battery mid day.

I am a bit disappointed to the battery. Without 4g and I barely make it to a day. I am a moderate user. No android apps. Stock official OS.

So is it possible to replace the battery or will that have to be done by a service tech? I know you can get the battery online.

I just came from my Z10 to the Z30 today. Got the phone at 2:30 pm and immediately put the latest leak on. Didn't even get past the choose language screen lol. The battery was at about 47% when I removed the USB and than I installed 36 apps and 2 movies. Plus I added 3 email accounts and Facebook and I am setting at 18%. I've also been BBMing and texting for the last hour or so straight while using the crackberry app. I'd have to say battery life is going to be great.

I found my battery improved dramatically over the first week, for a moderate/heavy user of BBM and data, I'm still getting through a whole day on a single charge, around 15 hours! Brilliant compared to my iPhone...that would conk out after 6 hours!
