I really do see this device and the Q20 classic as two of the most important product launches.

The Z3 needs to gain traction for the good of the whole BB10 ecosystem.

I read somewhere it will be launched by end of april. I hope BlackBerry indonesia has started hyping the launch.

I really hope they deliver with the Z3. I also hope they make it available more broadly than South-East Asia at the same low price point, and quickly.

It will be a nice surprise if the rumour that the Z3 might have 720x1280 display instead of a 540x960 display pans out, but it's not critical for success here.

I'm pretty conservative on my predictions for the Q20's success. The Q10 was "going to" sell millions and millions to consumers, SMB, and enterprise alike... Didn't pan out exactly. I hope they're right and the Q20 is what it takes to convert thousands of legacy enterprise devices to BB10. Fingers crossed!

"Needs to be" is right. 3 million is what I think it needs to sell in its first quarter or it's over for BB10. Just my prediction.

If the Z3 allows BB10 sells to be > BBOS in a quarter. To me it would be a success. But I hope they aim much higher !!!

It is rumoured that Nokia's low end android phone the USD130 nokia X has 1 million pre orders in china alone. This device is inferior in almost every way to the Z3.

Z3 having half a million pre orders in indonesia alone would be a decent start with 3-5 million sold by quarter end across the selected markets.

These phones need to be free with a really cheap contract. The carriers in indonesia are very supportive of BlackBerry if not BlackBerry wouldn't have made a device specially for that market, I hope the rest of the selected markets are also.

To me, that solves the problem of the optics. As much as Belfast doesn't want to admit it, the reality is that BlackBerry OS sales will die off anyway, regardless of BlackBerry 10's performance.

I do agree with OP though - these launches are important in terms of growing BlackBerry 10 as a whole. In reality, they are supposed to do what Q5 and Q10 didn't really do - appeal to the emerging markets where BlackBerry has more strength; and convince more the the tens of millions of upgraders to upgrade.

Time will tell if this works and leads to other exciting devices.

I think it's will be a huge success, 3 million is realistic number to chase for 1-2 quarters .
But remember that BlackBerry Indonesia needs to compete with Samsung & cheap chinese phone in terms of marketing, especially TV ads.

Point out the great features like BlackBerry now running new BB10 OS with no lag, battery pull or annoying hourglass.

And I think it's fine to mention about the ability to run android apps, though we know that BlackBerry against it to put it in ads.

The typical ads by comparing devices like what j_caloy did is good enough to stir up the iOS & android users

If they sell 3 million then two things will happen: first their sales will double from last quarter, and second BB10 sales will roughly double BBOS7 sales. They need those stories to come true, both internally and in the minds of the media / consumers.

My belief is that the Z3 is being sold at almost no profit. The goal here isn't to make money, it's the last chance for BB10 to gain enough traction to one day make money. If it can't do that then I really think it's over for the OS (and note that I'm emphasizing BB10 here not BlackBerry entirely).

Do you guys think that getting BB10 in to more people's hands might also increase BBW revenue? More customers, more market for devs, hopefully more quality apps and bigger names hence more sales.
I feel that's important because switching people from BIS is going to cause a service revenue decrease. Do you maybe see another way of making this happen.

This is what I hope the Q20 will achieve. The current BBOS customers are a little unwilling to change to John Chen has created a product for them. Hope it pans out.

I agree. This is BlackBerry's chance to get BB10 into the hands of millions of new and existing users and really bolster the BlackBerry's market share for that 3rd position. They need a virtual keyboard device that will compete and gain back some users lost to iPhone, Android and Windows. The physical keyboard users will always be there, but this is where BlackBerry can gain back people lost to other OS's.

BlackBerry needs to market this device to the masses, release it in LTE for developed markets and keep the price under $200. If they do all of that then BB10 should gain traction and get the hardware side of the business going again.

I think so too, but reading that they plan to release it later this year in LTE is kinda bothering me. I hope the release doesn't come to late. They need to get this low cost device in the hands of as much as possible people, regardless of the market.
Also I hope that 'under 200$' for the 3G version doesn't mean 199$ - which is often the case when companies make statements like that. I hope it's more like 149$ - 179$, which can make a big difference.

Does anyone else feel like they already messed up a little? I don't see this going well unless wide availability is MAX 30 days from first launch. Somehow I'm not terribly sure it will be, perhaps if they offer it direct at least?
