So far we have only seen the usual marketing and PR stuff from BlackBerry on how the Z3 is a big success. I think one way to get a rough estimate on how successful the phone really is, is to examine app download numbers for the device.

I will start first: Based on our numbers the Z3 is a non-event. Download numbers in Indonesia across all our apps for the first 3 days are similar to the Q5. Nothing to brag about. This could obviously have many reasons (small sample set, too early etc), so it doesn't necessarily mean the phone isn't doing well, but if more app developers see the same over the next couple of days and weeks it might be a good indicator before we see real numbers during quarterly earnings.

If you are an app developer, what download numbers are you seeing for the Z3 (obviously excluding any Z3 promotions)?

    I'm also curious about this.

But I would think one should give it a bit more time, no? Did you see a large spike the first day of release of any of the previous devices?

Also - I could be wrong but I would guess that purchases of apps in developing countries on a per-user basis are probably lower than in developed countries, as every dollar of purchase price is a higher percentage of the average wage there.

Also, I'm not sure if Blackberry has released any significantly new device in only one country in recent history - can you think of any examples?

If you are seeing similar downloads to the Q5, then that's great!! It means that the Z3 is similar in sales to the Q5, the Q5 has been out a long time!! While the Z30 has been out a few days.

The OP is one the most well-known and longstanding BB developers that exist, and makes some of the most popular BB10 apps. (ie BeBuzz, BeWeather, BeMaps, etc.)

Yes, but imo free apps are downloaded by a way broader audience than paid apps so that would give us a better idea of the actual situation.

85 for Q5 are worldwide downloads out of 10 are in Indonesia. So 10 compared to 3 in Indonesia is too small a sample to draw conclusions from

With this google trends data, I think the public is more interested in Z3 launch than they were in Q5 launch, but BlackBerry didn't build the Z3 in huge volumes.

Considering the limited launch, 3% is quite surprising, no?

Is that 3% of your downloads in Indonesia? Or 3% of your worldwide downloads?

It is worldwide. Most of the z3's were from Indonesia. Caveat that it's downloads, not unique users. Sample size is a few hundred downloads over the past 3 days. I think it's a useful datapoint for painting a bigger picture, but nothing more than an anecdote on it's own. It is similar to the Q5 numbers that I saw around it's launch, and a bit lower than z30 numbers were for my particular app.

Thanks for the hard data! Caveats aside, I think this is another positive sign for the launch, considering it was in only one country.
