This topic exists to discuss the future "jakarta" device... reports, rumours, leaks, photos, specs etc

What you think of these rumours that "jakarta" will be a full touch?

Despite being a QUERTY guy, I think the full touch is the way to go, because is what the mass market is looking for, and is just the best way to get BB10 in the hands of people. For querty guys, there are still the BB7 alternatives with strong phones like the 9900 or the 9790, but I expect sooner or later that Foxconn would make a Jakarta's brother with QUERTY aswell, since it is the brand's image.

What you guys think? good move? bad move?

The move makes sense. I suspect if BlackBerry wants to keep costs and prices down (crucial in Indonesia and Africa), moving to the 'industry standard' slab makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see this device targeted at $150 or less off contract.

5 inch screen, 1080p, 2 GB of ram and 16GB of storage. With a nice 2350 amp battery and 10.2.1 or 10.2.2. I think that's a good start 200$ off contract.

Erm you do realise this is supposed to be an even cheaper phone than that don't you? Think $100 -$150.

Doubt it'll be 5" and 1080p in that market when the Z30 isn't.

I think, I have read somewhere that jakarta phone will not be
enterprise ready phone. That way it will be cheaper than other BlackBerry smartphones.

I liked this idea very much. Because non corporate user not required enterprises feature in their phone

Exactly. I can't get BlackBerry Balance on my Z10 cause I am not on BES.

That doesn't ring true as a BB10 phone being 'Enterprise Ready' is all done in software.

There aren't savings to make by chopping Balance out of the OS that you already have ready to use, in fact it would cost time (money) to remove it.

How competitive is this phone really going to be? I live in the US and just went to the grocery store. They had a new display with pay as you go phones, and I was shocked to see several cheap phones with keyboards (many looked like Q5). The phones were made by Kyocera and Samsung. Are these already available in these other markets?

I was using a cheap feature phone (semi smart or whatever you want to call it) a while ago. Always had qwerty. It's called Huawei G6600D. Full qwerty.

These things are out there, and an option for cheapskates or low income folks that want qwerty anyway.

I imagine a 4.5 inch 720p super amoled display with a 2100 mAh (same as the q10) battery, 2GB of Ram and 16GB of expandable storage. 8MP camera (same as the Z10) with a 3 or 5MP front facing camera (very good for selfies and BBM voice calls I mean come on front facing cameras should start getting better). I guess such specs at 130-150$ would make Blackberry a real competitor in this segment. Of course with nice finishings and design with the back cover material of the Q10 and Z30 or other plastic with some aluminum finishing would be nice.

I think they should release this device in other markets too. I think it would go down well with the young crowd in the UK.

Specs should be modest give the price point... I think the most important is that the specs are enought to have a smooth experience, so that the BB10 OS realy starts to gain traction

I just think that the device BlackBerry should follow or at least be influenced by is the Huawei Y300.

If we are dealing with a budget smartphone. This has almost everything you could want.

Rather than design a new phone from top to bottom a cheaper Z10 or Z5 would be a good start to go cheap. I hope that the new device has HDMI out, this makes the device versatile! This also opens the door to more aftermarket products like wireless keyboards.

Saying that, a 2ghz dual core CPU and 2 gigs RAM would be entry level by the time the device is released. 16gig expandable memory would also be average by then.

Screen size, I don't see why a 5 inch screen can't work. Foxconn could easily use common components from other devices it already builds at significantly less cost than if BlackBerry were building the device.
