So here is the deal. I was able to get both the z10 battery bundle where you can remove your dead battery in your z10 and swap it with a fresh one or have the option of plugging the charging pack directly into your z10.

So what do you with the battery pack do?

The reason I ask is because I gave my dad my z10 and went with the z30.

I purchased and have 2 battery packs. Both the one for the z10 with the removable spare battery and the battery charging pack of the z30 where the battery is not removable.

The one for the 30 simply has a plug to which you put into your phone.

The question is, which one is best? In think the z30 charging pack hold more juice than the z10 one but you can swap batteries out.

Leaning towards the z30 one as it reduces the need for dad to keep cracking apart his z10 to change the battery.

    Thoughts?

    I can't follow you here.

Battery swaps are twice as efficient as external charging with another battery pack. Does that answer your question?

    Thanks.

Guess battery swaps are more efficient and one thing the z30 can't do.

Only thing is, dad's got to get comfortable with ripping the back off his z10

Swapping battery is quick and fast but requires the extra steps to swap

If your dad is comfy with the z30 battery pack, then leave him be

I got the 4500Mah extended battery for my Z10 for about a month now and I must say I simply LOVE it! Ever since doing this change, I have not even thought about going back to the original one. The phone is a bit bulkier and you can't use a phone cover, but you quickly get used to it. Battery lasts ALL DAY and some more!

Charging the Z10 through the bundle only gives about 55% additional charge. While the swap gives you 100% charge.

I would jump all over that extended battery if there was a case available for it. Got to have a case.

    Hey,
Does your Z10 read the correct battery percentage with the extended 4500mAh battery? I have the 3800mAh mugen pro and I used my phone heavily and it reached 0%. At that point it didn't even turn off It kept on going for a few more hours before I gave up and realize I couldn't discharge this beast.
My question is the following : is there a settle time for the software to adapt to the new battery or will it always be like this? Because it's annoying to not know precisely how much time you'll have left and getting the low batt yellow led straining your eyes all day.

Z10 user poll: use battery pack and swap batteries OR just plug it in and charge off charging bundle-img_20131139.png

I use the charging bundle and don?t swap batteries. It gives me enough juice until I reach my charger or USB port. My battery life is pretty good unless I'm extremely bored and browsing like a mad man.

That's because the batteries equalize. The term charging is inaccurate if you just plug the bundle into device. If you have a fully charged spare battery and a near empty device battery, you'll only get around 50%. The spare battery cannot charge anything higher than itself.

Similar to filling compressed cylinders. They equalize unless you have a constant power source like a compressor.

What is the battery 'capacity' of the z10 battery?

Is it 1800 mah? I know the wall charger is only 700mah. So how does it make it up to 1800 mah?

You need to look at ampers, not amh. Amh is capacity - how many amper hours battery can store.

Z10 has 1800 mah which means it can output a current of 1800 mA for one hour before it is fully drained. Since your wall charger never drains, it doesn't make sense to talk about how many mah your wall charger has.

Lithium ion batteries are 4.3v, so the charger bundle has a dc/dc step up converter to reach the 5v charging voltage. There is loss in this step up converter. Then when you charge the battery in the phone from the external charger cord, you have additional loss from the step down converter in the phone. This is why you get half the play time if you charge instead of swap. That is, you need to multiply the efficiencies of the two dc/dc converters. For example, if they are 80% efficient, then the net effect is 64%.

Thanks for this detailed reply. This pretty much explains why I cannot get my handsets battery completely full when using an external battery pack to charge my phone. Well unless the battery pack is a really big one with a lot of capacity.

Theoretically, a 700mAh battery charger will charge an 1800mAh battery in 2.57 hours. Realistically, 3 to 3-1/2 hours will do it. Voltage of 5v over 4.5v is no biggie. More volts will load more quickly (up to a point).

I understand that there is loss during charging from many sources like resistance etc... I misunderstood the following

The spare battery cannot charge anything higher than itself
I thought you meant to say that, for example, a spare battery at 70% (in a bb charger bundle) could not charge a phone battery that was at 90% (since, in this case the spare battery was "lower" than the phone battery).

Clearly, a spare can't provide another battery with more energy than it contains itself.

I see. So -- understood this way -- it does make sense to talk of mah with wall chargers. My mistake.

To get a full charge on the phone, you need about 2x the battery capacity in the external charger. Those old chargers with the two AA cells were Ok when phones had dinky batteries.

Oh, and if you are using the phone, you probably won't get a full charge since you are also powering the phone.
