You are looking at a man with a LOT of experience of electronics and software for over 25 years across a very diverse and broad range of platforms, but whom is stuck with this one thing...

I have a Z10 which I got from eBay as "dead" - in as much as the PC won't recognise it - AT ALL - not in ANY sense, not even making a USB plugin sound... NADA.

Now, knowing what I do about mobile phones, I happen to know that most (if not all) have a TINY little coin cell battery soldered onto the board to retain date/time (Realtime Clock - an equivalent to the BIOS battery CR2032 on a PC) etc... so after exhaustive attempts at keypress combos, battery pulls and every conceivable variation of 100s of posts worth of advice on this forum, I decided to take my Z10 apart, and I measured the weeny battery and it was DEAD as a doormouse, so then de-soldered and lifted one end of the TINY battery... and WhaddaYaKnow - when I plug it into my PC, the PC now makes the USB connected sound, but in device manager the Z10 appears as an "HID Device" with Vendor/Device IDs of "05c6:f006" - some sort of obscure Qualcomm "HS-USB" mode, from what posts I've read from other "bricked" device owners, via Google.

I am able to find page upon page of "de-bricking" guides for Android phones exhibiting similar symptoms, but NOTHING for the dear Z10 I paid just £17 for.

Before I resign this potentially revivable beauty to the spare parts bin, does anyone here have any specialist or obscure knowledge as to how to kick the bootloader/flash the bootloader back in whilst the CPU/USB/whatever chip is in "05c6:f006" mode, and get it as far as bootrom to allow Autoloader to invoke a fresh install of 10.3.2?

May as well ask - I've spent a few hours on this now, and I am far from an fool - I have great patience and extreme resourcefulness and asking here is my way of saying "I'm out of ideas - could you suggest anything please?" - I don't want to waste a phone, and I don't care how long any suggested procedures would take - I have infinite free time - I would love to fix this - I love a challenge, the harder the better

Thank you folks, God bless you

    Matthew.

Did you actually try hitting it with an autoloader?

Well of course... that's like asking someone with a car which won't start "Did you try turning the key?"

An Autoloader is of course the first thing a lateral thinker would try, and thanks for making sure, I appreciate it.

It's not going to load the Autoloader - it's in a VERY low level Qualcomm mode... I have ascertained that much at least.

I think you're out of luck.

I've seen BB10 devices running a diagnostic/factory OS stub, but nothing less than that.

I'm after a fix, I don't believe in "luck" so having or not having it is neither here nor there, since it doesn't exist. I am very patient and very VERY practical and not at all fazed by doing things with hardware that would scare many people (because in this modern day everyone wants a "one size fits all" hand-holding automagical fix, which ANY engineer worth listening to will tell you is a myth) - I thank you for your viewpoint, let's see if anyone else comes up trumps

    Thank you again.

I've up-ended one leg, as it was dead - replacing it won't prove a thing as far as I am aware, as its purpose is a backup, and whether or not it is connected, the 3v rail it sustains when the main battery is removed, is provided on board when the phone is powered by the main battery.

    I think...

Isn't the first time I've seen this. Here's an example...

    Update:

Got a 3V cell on wires with probes, and connected it across where the old (dead) 3V cell was. Connected to PC ... first off device manager saw it and said "installing drivers" and then it said "Unknown Device Descriptor" and no VID/PID were shown (they were before) - I repeated these steps twice, now it sees NOTHING again, even with the old 3V cell up-ended and disconnected + NO external test battery (internal) connected across the pads.

    Curiouser and curiouser...

Unless you know a guy who works at BlackBerry R&D/QA, you aren't going to get anything at low enough of a level in order to jolt the phone back to life. The most advanced tool available to us plebs is a very old version of CFP (i.e. flash/wipe memory), which still is at the same level as the autoloader. Barring some former employee dropping in with an extremely low level programming tool and saying "shh bby is ok", the phone is toast.

Yep, my sentiments exactly. I am done with this device - I'll sell on as spares/repairs, the same as I got it, I don't think spending more time on it is fruitful - I'll just slap it back on the 'Bay complete with a detailed, unambiguous definition of the term "dead" in this context, in case some other hopeful thinks "Ah, an Autoloader fix - yipee!" and is disappointed. Meh, it was worth a punt at a mere £17 - I have two other fully working Z10s with broken SIM slot pins, both of which cost the same - at least I come out with a spare battery for them from this one!

Surely it's gonna be worth something for the screen or other parts alone - I mean, there are other people like me out there who don't think £17 is anything more than loose change down the back of the couch, and will snap it up, and if not... well, it's happy in the spares bin.

You can probably salvage the screen, maybe anything that's on a separate PCB from the mainboard (i.e. rear camera and headphone assembly).

Not convinced I'll ever need a replacement Z10 camera - lovely devices, I only bought them because I like maximum exposure to lots of mainstream and non-mainstream (well, in marketshare) devices that most people wouldn't bother to look at, (MORE so because it's an older handset which people snub their noses at for being "out of date".) Lovely hardware, well built and solid - I also love the Classic I bought dirt cheap and BRAND NEW for £30... just curios to me, and I like keeping up to speed with all manner of platforms and software builds... just enough so that if someone asks me a question about X, Y or Z device or platform, I can give an INFORMED decision based on hands-on usage through my own choice, not some copy/paste "opinion" which amounts to something someone said, found via a Google search - I like to give HONEST views, open ended in manner, so people can see what's what, bias free.
