This is a great story I would like to share. Yesterday my girlfriend and I picked up my niece from school, and went Window shopping around the local plaza. We made a pit stop at a Sports Authority to use the restroom only. My niece and girlfriend went to use the restroom. I guess my niece had trouble getting out of the stall, so my girlfriend was helping her. Not knowing, she left her black Z10 on the counter sink so she can help my niece.
After we had left Sports Authority and went to one more store, we were on our way home and realized she did not have her Z10. We rushed back and not finding it at all. I was attempting to speak with the Sports Authority manager asking to see the camera activity, while I remembered about BlackBerry Protect. I had my girlfriend login from my Z10 and believe it or not, the location of the phone has moved about half a mile from where we are. We decided to track it down and while refreshing the location, we finally ended up at a residential area about 5 miles away.
To make the story a bit shorter, we went to the city police department where it was taken and filed a lost property report. After realizing the PD couldn't really help us search people's houses, u decided to go with my gut and trust the location spot. Knocked on the door, no answer. Saw someone peeking through the window, but no one opened the door. It's been about 5 minutes of knocking and door bell ringing, I decided to execute the loud sound feature. That's when I heard the sound very distinctly and knew the phone was inside.
After harder knocking, someone came from behind me coming out through the garage. I explained u heard my phone and the location tracked me here. I got my girlfriends Z10 back thanks to BlackBerry Protect! Anyone else had to use this life saving feature?

Great story. I left my Z10 on the TTC Subway in Toronto. I tried to locate the phone it wouldn't work since it was underground. Few days later went to the lost and found gave it a shot. Thank god someone nice lady returned the phone.

Wow! Great story! I've lost a feature phone before and it's not fun. Protect is one of my most cherished features on my device and I can't wait until they get it back up to par with the BBOS version.

That's a great story for the protection of your Blackberry and property...

But it's a terribly sad story when you step back and look at the scope of it. It's sad that in this day and age that as soon as you put something down in public other people decide to make it their property rather than trying to do the right thing and get it back to its rightful owner.

Maybe I'm just getting old fashioned.

Unfortunately, as I heard another guy was not so lucky and got killed while trying to get his phone back.

I do not know it for sure, I think I read it somewhere in here.
    Hopefully it is not true.
Anyhow good for you, but I would have asked the police to escort me along with the DA.

Thanks everyone. I was a bit nervous knocking the door as there was a security camera monitoring me. And yes, very disappointed that in such a quick amount of time (30 minute span or less), the phone goes missing. We will definitely be having a wrist strap or something attached to our Z10's now haha.

So how difficult was it to get it back once you talked to the dude who came out? Had to be an awkward conversation.

Well thankfully it wasn't any thugs or guys, it was an older woman around their 45-50year age. She only spoke Spanish. I had to tell her that my phone tracked me here and I just heard the loud sound go off. She tried to ask me where did I lose it and what color it is, etc. I just told her i just want my phone back and she had her son go get it. She then told me she didn't find it in the bathroom, but in a pile of clothes. Simply trying to tell me other things I didn't believe since my girlfriend used the restroom only.
Once we had the phone in our hands, I just politely said I have the phone I'm leaving now. She definitely was trying to take it and cover up her story.

Cant do is the appropriate word here my friend. There is such a thing that prevents police from just going into people's home without just cause. You may have heard of it, it's called the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It prevents unlawful search of a house. So don't say Won't. I'm sure the police would love nothing more then be able to just walk right in random homes to help you out.

Great story OP. Just sad that someone concerned enough about their own property to have security cameras at their house would not respect other people's property. Glad to hear you got your phone back.

No offence, but you should have been more than "nervous". Not sure where you are in the world, but the minute I heard that phone---if I would have even got to that point, I would have called the police, have them respond to that location, and showed them the site/location and let them handle it from there.

There are so many idiots/deranged morons out there anymore, and no device is worth your life and well-being. I was a fire fighter/Emergency Medical type in a previous life, and have seen blood-shed and death for far LESS than a smartphone. Count your blessings. In more than a few metropolitan areas in the US, I would say the chances of you walking away unscathed from an experience like you descriube are indistinguishable from zero.

That being said, I am glad you got ur phone back. I am happier, for you, that you are able to share it with us. I also think BB Protect is awesome, but no way in heck am I going to confront someone in a non-public environment that I am not familiar with about a lost phone.

BTW, my lecture aside , BB Protect helped me "remember" what restaurant I left my phone (my old 9780 at the time) in after a few malted beverages one night. Yes, got the phone back, and YES, the beer was GREAT (wife was driving).... lol. It WAS funny when the manager said we didn't find one, right about the time my wife set off the sonar alert on the thing, and it was rumbling right below his belt line under the greeter's podium at the front of the restaurant. That was a classic as well.

    BB Protect for the win.

I would think that if you had BlackBerry Protect website pulled up and could show where your phone is that was stolen that would be just cause... maybe that is just in the US...

...or, at the very least, get a police report, on site, document on the report that the police observed the location and the of the phone, and it appears to be "here", then file a stolen property report and let a detective handle it from there. For sure, there are laws that differ from country to country.

In the US, depending on locality, that information, along with proof of ownership of the phone, MAY meet the criteria for probable cause to, at least, rap on the door, and say "hey dude, we have reason to believe that there is a phone that has been "misplaced" in this residence. Produce it, and we'll all have a nice evening, Otherwise, we'll wait here for a warrant to search (those can be obtained relatively quickly, if need be, and requested by the police)". Have been around when that kind of stuff happened as well.

I'ts amazing how so many think the police are going to lift a hand in this situation. Sheriff Taylor doesn't exist anymore.
If you have proof of location then they will probably at least go with you to knock on the door even if they can't search...once at the door you activate the alarm which will probably give probable cause for search if location on Protect wasn't enough...if you don't have proof of location then they probably will do nothing more than a report...

The OP left out the part of the story I was interested in hearing the most. The part about what happened after he executed the loud sound feature. It just ends with "I got my girlfriends Z10 back". Obviously something transpired after. How did the conversation go?
