Desktop Manager (BB Link) for the Z10 has the apploader folder and .exe in the same place were the previous version of DM had it. So I don't see there being an issue installing it from BB Link. I do see there being an issue if the carriers only push it to their devices and don't provide a download version.

There is a backdoor way to get firmware - it's the same method as for PlayBooks in a sense.

First go to BlackBerry - Software Updates - New Update Software for BlackBerry Smartphones - US
Next Disconnect your Z10 from USB and make SURE that Link and DM are not running. (Link allows wifi connections so you need to kill it even though you are using a cable for this).
Third Power off your Z10 (hold the button on the top long enough).

Look for the paragraph "Update on the Web" and click that blue button.
Quickly connect your powered off Z10 to the PC.
    Power it on

You should see the option to re-load new firmware.
(I did it 2x yesterday so it's just a matter of timing to get it right - but it will download a new copy exactly as the PlayBook did).

    Have fun.

Will reloading firmware like this remove carrier branding and (possibly) sim lock?

Carrier branding?? What carrier branding? I have yet to see a Z10 in Canada that has any carrier branding on it.

When I received my unbranded (are there actually branded units out there?) Z10 from London (I live in Germany), I turned it on and off without a SIM card and neither was a firmware update available nor was any carrier logo showing up in the process.
After I inserted my Vodafone Germany SIM card, suddenly a firmware update was available and after the firmware update installation, the Vodafone logo showed up when turning the phone off.
So I think that the logo showing up is related to the SIM card inserted and the carrier used.

True. I did this as well using my local sim card and there was no branding.. then I put the o2 one in and now a splash screen loads on boot up and shutdown, even with my local sim in the device.

You can't load one piece of hardware physically into another one, so I don't think that's what you meant.

Can you please provide a little more detail of what you are trying to do?
