I have a brand new Z10, and the first months data was fine - used more than my bold obviously, but I was still comfortably under my data limit. Late last night I got the notification that I had used 75 percent of my data then this afternoon I get a message saying I'm at 95 percent used, and I still have16 days left in my bill cycle. 20 percent in less than 12 hours seems excessive, as I didn't use my phone any more than normal. I've hade regulars like Facebook, twitter etc since day one, so I don't think they are the culprit. Are there any per apps known to eat data even if you rarely use them?

I have the same issue and am currently in the process of wiping it and reinstalling everything. It used 380MB is 6 days.

Is your phone a work phone and connected to BES10?

Check your settings on your social apps and you notification settings.

What should those settings be to get the best use of data?

Youtube? The amount of data rises if the pages you surf have "youtube-windows"-embedded, even if you pause them! Happened to me this month, too... but I installed some Apps "on the air". Better turn off you data/network activity and do the installation/downloads over WiFi

I think it maybe the Browser personally. I've played videos in Browser from twitter that may struggle to load if I have a slow wifi or 2g connection. I give up but as soon as I walk in to 3G it plays by itself. (4G finally arrives in London this week) I make sure all my tabs in my browser get closed before I finish.

Don't quote me though, I'm on an unlimited test drive with vodafone so I'm not sure if its the cause but I gotta watch it when I'm back on a cap.

Make sure they are not refreshing info often either turn them off or set for the longest time between updates.

Look at your data usage on the website for your supplier. I went through this too. I found constant 18.5mb for 1, 2, 3 hours in a row. My carrier couldn't tell me why, or what the data was being used for. I would see 18.5mb of data used at 3 in the morning when I am sleeping, and of course on wifi. I'd be at work on wifi and see 18.5mb being used as well.
I called and got my overages removed. Seems fine now...
