here's what finally got everything working:

Username: Complete email address.
ADD YOUR PASSWORD IN THE PASSWORD FIELD ANYWAY
Incoming Mail server: pop-server.xxxxx.rr.com
Incoming Port Number: 110
Don't Check SSL
Secure Server should be OFF
Authentication clear or None

Username: Complete email address.
ADD YOUR PASSWORD IN THE PASSWORD FIELD
Outgoing Mail server: mobile-smtp.roadrunner.com
Outgoing Port number: 587
Secure Server should be OFF
Authentication: Password or Check Requires Sign in box.

I have tested these settings via WiFi -->RR Network
AND
Over TMo network,

...and sends and receives work well all the way around.

This is all with 10.1 leaked OS

thank you. appreciate your kind comment. took some fussing (and cussing) and a few heated chats with tech support chimps who couldn't tie their shoes without adult supervision, until, today, I got a GOOD rr support dude who actually WANTED to see this get fixed rather than the normal "blame the carrier and move on" plan.
