Is there a way to make it always open in normal mode instead of the conversion mode? If there is I can't seem to find it

Mine always opens in the last mode it was in. Tip is often the case for me like bert106.

Mine seems to depend on when I last used it... it uses last mode if I have recently opened it. but seems to revert back to tip mode after a long period of close or a reboot

The calculator doesn't appear to have percentage. But if you turn your Z10 into landscape mode you are given more options.

Why do you need percentage ? Did you forget how to use fractions/decimals?

You can use the "tip" option if you can figure out simple percentages

If you're an "old school" old fart like I am, go into app world, search for RPN calculator, and purchase it. It is a Z10 rendering of an "old-school" HP RPN calculator.

If you're not RPN challenged, it is great. If you are asking what RPN is, probably not for you....no equals key, everything driven by a stack via an "enter" key.

That is my goto calculator now, ON MY PHONE, when my HP41, HP48, or my HP50 is not close-at-hand.

And, yes, before you ask, I AM old school, I AM an old fart, and, yes, I AM an "old" aero guy, and often grumpy....so RPN all the way...

If you swipe down from the top bezel while in the calculator...you are presented with three options; Standard, Unit Converter, and Tip. Which ever one you press last should be blue and has become the default view when you open the Z10 built in calculator.
