    I would not mind buying one outright and unlocked like you can from Google and their offerings.
    I have 20 months or so left on Telus but don't want to have to sign up for another three years.
    Why did all the mobile providers roll over for Google and allow them to sell to customers directly?

    you can get that from the UK...i think Phones4u sells "sim-free" phones (as they call it), which is unlocked and outright. Or just buy one outright and unlock it; you don't lose anything.
