I'm sure you've noticed that whenever BlackBerry are in the news, the media post pics of the old phones, often beaten up old phones, and almost never show images of the BlackBerry 10 devices that have been out for quite some time now.

Is this laziness, a BlackBerry's fault for not supplying stock images to the media of the news phones, or what?

They are promoting the old (dead) image of blackberry as current. It's intentional.
Usually the next image is of a stampede of crazed people running to grab a golden iPhone 5s.

Because the images are there to highlight the story - The previous models are instantly recognisable as Blackberry's. I'm sure it's that simple.

Whatever the cause or reason, I think it's possible that it has had a minor influence on the perception of BlackBerry. The phones in the pics always look old and way out of date (because they are). I would wonder if BlackBerry have tried to supply them with current pics so that the phones could be shown instead, but I can answer that one for myself...
