My guess is that you are on Tmobile ( if you are in the states). iMS stands for ip multimedia subsystem and is an essential component for wifi calling which ends up (in my hands at least) to be a pretty big deal,

You'll have to get in touch with your carrier to see if they offer the service and find out about activating it.
Unless you aren't using the official OS of your carrier

It appears to be an LTE enhancement to be implemented when the carriers network gets upgraded sometime in the future. I'm on Verizon and my IMS status says connected, but my IMS service button is grayed out so it can't be turned on.

It stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem and is a component of the 4G LTE network technology. It's used for VoIP (phone calls over data), SMS and MMS routing over LTE. You can do lots of other things with it too, like additional services such as IM,dedicated streaming services etc. Pretty neat. It's controlled by the carrier, so it'll be enabled when they role out 4G LTE. You'll get a minor software upgrade OTA when it's available and you're on a plan that makes use of it

Not many carriers have it yet in EU and Asia, as LTE 4G is predominantly data only. VZW in the US use it, and EE in the UK at the moment.
