For the first time during a phone call with my mom, this little icon showed up (The HD). Not quite sure what it means. Anyone have any ideas?

This is all my info if it helps

My mom is on a Bold 9700

And as you can also see I'm on 4G, which is rare.

I believe it means that the call is crystal clear, as in High Definition. I don't see that too much being on Telus

That means you were on a high definition call...only the highest call quality gets that

Don't want to sound like I'm bragging, and I know a lot of people rag on Bell, but I get that on a lot of my calls.

Thanks for the answers but how come I've never seen it before. I've had the phone since February 16th. Is it new on 10.1?

I thought it was carrier dependent (assuming one's phone is compatible)?

I've got it on 10.1 with T-Mobile. Don't really pay attention to it though. The one time I did notice I was on a call with a Verizon Z10. Didn't sound any better (maybe since they are still on 10.0), BBM voice still takes the cake.

As far as I know (I can be wrong) it will always say HD INITIALLY then the icon disappears. HD calls depend on carrier support first and then the person on the other end of the call has to have a phone (fairly recent phone) that supports HD calls like I believe i4s+/ S3+...ect...

Side note: This may also apply to blue tooth headsets if your in the market for one you'll notice they now feature "HD CALLING" however that only works if your phone supports HD calls and the other person on the end has a handset that supports HD calls as well.

Yeah, it'll drop from LTE to H+/4G as voice over LTE isn't provisioned...

Carrier has to support it and the device being used at both ends! Most of the recent devices support HD calls (the codec for it).

Same with me, I'm on Bell's network too and a high percentage of the calls if not all of them are in HD. Sounds fantastic!

I guess everyone you call has carrier support and handset support for HD calls?

No go on VZW until 2014.

In short, it's carrier dependent. T-Mobile is the only US carrier to of have rolled it out. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wideband_audio#Deployment

Find out if Verizon and your buddies carrier support it.

A Lot of the new phones on market support and have built in HD calls capabilities but if no carrier support then pretty useless. I think the phones are ahead of the carriers in that way that when the carriers do mainstream support HD calls then the phones are capable. Kinda like NFC in away I guess.
