I've tested it using BlackBerry Virtual Expert and it recognises the input and I can even skip tracks by holding it down for a couple of seconds however it is adamant in not letting me increase the volume. I really don't want a replacement so is there anything you guys can suggest?

If you have hub++ running it changes the volume up key to dismiss notifications. Hold it to increase the volume or turn off that option in the app.

That's the only thing I can think of at the moment that would interfere with the button.

Yes, I had the same issue. Simply turn off notification in the hub++ app.
