Answer is no!!! Use any charger you want, I'm an electrical engineer and design this stuff... BlackBerry uses very cheap chargers to begin with so anything else you use is probably an upgrade. Anything higher then 1.5 amps is best. The reason the stock charger is 1.2 is to save money... The only reason!
You are correct that rapid charging will not adversely affect the life span of a battery but the point you've missed is heat. When using a rapid charger, you are more likely to cause the battery to heat up, particularly if you're rapidly charging and using the phone at the same time. This will definitely decrease the life span of the battery.

If you're only going to keep your phone for a year, then use whatever charger you want. But if you want your battery to last you two or three years, then there are some guidelines you should follow.

For those who use the rapid charger, go into the Engineering Screen and tell us what your battery's State of Health is. I practice proper charging techniques, rarely use a rapid charger, have had my phone over a year, and my battery's State of Health is 96%.
How long have you had your phone, what's your battery's State of Health, and do you use a rapid charger?

    Instructions:
Launch your BlackBerry 10 web browser and type escreen:// and click Go.
    Click OK.
Go to this website on a PC: eScreen Keygen and type in the appropriate information (Device PIN, OS Version, Uptime) in order to obtain the key. Once you have the key, type it in on the Engineering Screen. On Z10/Z30, swipe up from the bottom bezel to bring up the keyboard. You won't see anything happen until you type the last key.
The Diagnostics Screen will now pop-up.
Scroll down to OS Engineering Screen.
    Click on Battery.
    Click on Battery Monitoring Screen.
You should see the State of Health near the bottom (you have to scroll down on a Q10/5)

**NOTE: Do not make any changes anywhere in any screen**

Had a conversation with a repair shop friend -- these are the three warnings he voiced. I'm just the messenger.
    1) As stated above, watch out for rapid chargers that "overheat". Some do, some do not.
    2) Stay clear of "cheap-o" chargers that are low end imitations of stock chargers. He was referring to iPhone charger imitations some of which are very poorly constructed. But it also refers to the after market chargers in general. He's seen them short out and even deliver power different from their stated output.
    3) Stay away from "alien" chargers that are one piece. That is, if it's a charger with a built-in usb cable. The charger end itself may be all right, but the usb cable may have a proprietary wiring arrangement. HTC and Motorola (and others) had (have?) in the past done this making them not work or (apparently in the Motorola case) harmful to other phones.
