If I unlocked a locked z10 then will it have control of carriers providing software updates or will I get straight from blackberry with out carrier testing it

If you're in the US, put a Tmo sim in and you should get the 10.1MR if I'm not mistaken. You don't need to activate the sim and you don't need to have connection to the network, just WiFi.

I didn't want to start a new thread for what, I hope, is a stupid question(!) I bought a SIM free Z10 in the UK from Expansys.com. I put my O2 SIM in and I get all the O2 graphics on start up and shut down. I have one month left on my O2 contract and I want to switch to a new network (Three.) The new SIM should just work, right? The Z10 doesn't lock itself to the first network used or anything like that does it? I only ask as I am about to swap networks and someone in a thread on the Z10 on HotUKDeals said it did lock to the network of the first SIM used.

No, it will not lock.
Unlocked is unlocked is unlocked. Also the operator graphics depend on the SIM card.

Just one remark: keep your old O2 card. As O2 is much better with releasing the OS updates, it may help you get the updates. The card does not have to be active: you will get the OS update via WiFi.
(Yes: I tried it. My current operator in Poland is very slow with updates. I got few prepaid SIM cards from UK operators on Amazon, and just few days ago after I read on CB O2 is pushing update I popped the O2 card and updated to 10.1.0.4780).

The update comes from BlackBerry servers over WiFi. The sim card is only used to tell BlackBerry what update to give you. Nothing to do with carriers. What Z10 have you got? Type myver and press space.
