My first point is that just because something is "leaked" from BlackBerry does not make it safe: not for the user and not for BlackBerry itself.

My second point is all these "leaks" are damaging for BlackBerry because while they assuage a minority of tech-savvy users, they undermine the brand in the eyes of the average consumer/prosumer/enterprise customer.
    I disagree.

I would point out that the "average" consumer / prosumer / enterprise customer would really not know, or could care less, about "leaks". Especially when it comes to OS leaks, or the ability to grab official releases from other carriers.

You never see stories on the USA Today or CNN tech sections about all the BB OS 10 leaks that have occurred over the past year. And that is where these "average" people get their information and form opinions about a brand.

I've not seen one story on eWeek, or Business Insider discussing the leak of OS 10.2.1.1055, or any prior leak.

    Not one.

So tell me, where would this negative perception of BlackBerry come from as it relates to OS leaks?

The stories you do see in those sites I mentioned? BlackBerry fires a bunch more people, BlackBerry tries to sell itself, BlackBerry "fails" at trying to sell itself (as if that's a negative), BlackBerry let's a few more upper management people go...

That's where your "average" consumer / prosumer / enterprise customer gets their perception of the brand.

The "minority of tech-savvy users" happen to be the only ones that are even aware of the leaks in the first place.

Carriers don't make any OS at all. Even on OS10, they can only push their warez to your device, via SIM recognition.
I know that, I was just referring to it from other people's prospective who the think the only software pushed by carrier is official..

    Well said Sir!

There are step by step instructions for loading an OS if you choose to go that route.
I'm ready to take the plunge (my $199 Z10 is finally due to arrive tomorrow!), but I keep finding conflicting or confusing advice. Where are these step by step instructions of which you speak?

I believe in the US the FCC requires a "testing" period for any phone software before it is allowed in our market. Usually, it is a formality. But sometimes takes time. I'm on T-Mo running stock. Everything works perfectly. I need wifi-calling so have little interest in pooching it with a leak.

I am using the same hybrid! Call quality is not stellar on WIFI. Howver, if you absolutely need wifi calling, this is your best option. I downgraded from 10.2.1 because I never knew the value of half wifi calling to none. Hope it helps you.
Lol I'm on Verizon so doesn't affect me per se, but I'll let my brother know. Thanks for the insight!

The FCC only tests the physical phones before they can be sold in the US. Making sure our brains don't turn to jelly while making a call, and that all signals stay within their stated frequencies and not interfere with adjacent bands. And a bunch of other, I'm sure, very important stuff.

The FCC may have some technical requirement for the carriers in testing new software, but I don't believe such issues would hold up release for this long. The carriers have had 10.2 way longer than any previous OS before releasing it. They've certainly had 10.1.0.4780 long enough to release that MR. I ran it a while, and it was almost perfect - didn't even have the deleted SMS issue that the initial MR release had.

I'm on T-Mobile US, running 10.2.1.1055, and I have FCC approval. As someone else stated, they only test the hardware.

Edit: someone in this thread has stated that they have wifi calling with 10.2.0.1803, and someone else says they have it working with 10.2.1.1055, I've tried both of these OSes multiple times each and can't get it working, personally. The best build I've had it working with is 10.2.0.1791 using the 10.2.0.811 radio file. As I've said though, you'll have a "General Error" message pop up when sending SMS/MMS over wifi, and this will only work on a Z10. I've heard it does BAD things to a Q10.

Despite what a certain person has to say, I've asked around a bit, and many users say they still have wifi calling on their Z30's, and some still have it on Z10's as well.

In many ways the "leaks" are superior to the "approved" versions. (Most of them are approved from different companies. It's just that the US carriers are dragging their heels. It seems like they don't want us to continue using BlackBerry... kind of like the aforementioned "certain person"... I'm getting sidetracked again.) They bring lots of new features, fix bugs, extend battery life, etc.
