I'm not sure I follow the reasoning myself as Skype is free.
    BUT
I'm my personal experience, pk is intelligent, informed and very reasonable. So he's probably referring to a few specific posts.
The thread is not about a leak, it's about An altered official app. Just like blazes Netflix and participation in this thread.
I concur with that assessment of PK!

Just trying to understand how we went from a free app for a specific device to the legality of altering a file. Which goes to the whole "leaking" question.

I am not one to rock the boat I promise.... I just get ticked when legality comes into play for some but not all.

For those confused I figured it out.
The removed posts did not specifically deal with piracy, but could be easily used for these purposes.
    Good call pk.
Now can you make the OP share??? Hehehe

As a developer, you will have extra knowledge that allows you to try out different things, extract BARs, and so on. But to protect the integrity of other parties and ensure proper channels are followed, you cannot share BARs for external and uncontrolled distribution. Even if it is a free app, you need the developer's permission.

Even though Skype is free... they have the right to control to who and when it wants their app to be available. It also can track through official channels the kind of download numbers that it is getting. If it sees a million downloads through Blackberry World, that will sure encourage them to make an official native release.

Imagine if everyone downloaded a BAR off the internet, Skype would not know how many copies are "floating around" and how many people downloaded it or not. They may get skewed numbers. Also, if a bug or flaw is found in Skype, some security issue or whatever... then people with sideloaded versions would not get any upgrade notifications. Only official Blackberry World downloads get tracked and upgrade notifications.

Stick to Blackberry World for your apps and you will be safe and do the right thing.

Agree with everything you are saying which is all the more reason why the OP should not have started this thread at all. And one other question...why is it okay to "leak" a whole OS update (10.1) that won't be available till next month?

    Here's the deal people.

Yes, skype is a free app. But that does not mean it needs to be distribute outside of authorized channels. Using the authorized channels allows feedback to the developer and gives credibility to the app. It allows proper support and getting updates. Also, it prevents people's stuff from getting hacked.

Imagine getting a great expensive game for free by torrents. Installed it. Then find out your computer was used to host child porn. Yeah it is an extreme. But if you purchased that game or app from an authorized source, you would not have to worry.

I am also a dev of android apps. I do not want to see my apps distributed outside of the markets I submitted them to. How am I to know if my app was reversed engineered and had something malicious added it?

    Moral of the rant:

Wait for the final release for your device.

The OP is showing what Skype will look like. His intent was to get people excited. If Thorsten Heins showed up on stage with a preview of skype, would everybody be demanding the .bat file from him?

Maybe. But not like he was a dev going to pirate the app.

If Thor wanted to get up onstage and demo the app he would. So by the ops own logic, he has hurt his business relationship by making this public.

Skype isn't public yet. It is in a limited beta to the 1500 Devs with a DAC. A few of those Devs are just letting knowledge of that app out. No bragging, no shrills, nada.

Accept that and enjoy it is almost time

This high horse mentality is hilarious. CrackBerry has a whole fricking forum dedicated to side loading android apps. Tons of people are posting links to androidified bar files. Netflix link was leaked by CrackBerry operatives. Now all of a sudden we are worried about distribution rights? That is such a crock. Everyone settle down. Someone will leak it and there is nothing wrong with that.

Any moderator who is deleting posts should stop. Because you will also need to delete the entire side loading forum. There is absolutely no difference from ripping off free apk's from the Google play store and posting links and doing the same to bars from Blackberry world.

The hypocrisy of the past few posts are alarming.

Not to mention the leaked BB 10.1 OS. Bottom line is this, OP stated that he got this from a blackberry employee (which he's since retracted with edits) and the posts you speak of are damage control.

The side load/piracy/leaked apps debate will always be there. I am just putting insight from a regular app dev.

Some other Devs have their own ideals about app distribution.

Just relax. And be patient. If you want exclusive access, write some code and get into the dev scene.
