After using my legacy device for almost 3 years now, I planned to move on to OS 10. Then I had 2 options whether to buy Z30 or Z10. I chose Z10 because of the removable battery.
Now I notice that there are 3 versions of the Z10 and out of that 2 (STL100-1 or STL100-2) are available in my country (Sri Lanka).
I don't need 4G internet because I use 4G for my home network. But I do want a device which does not reboot or give me performances issues. Battery-wise I'm buying the charger craddle for Z10 so it won't be a problem. Price difference between version -1 and -2 is only $35 so it's not a problem either. So with that, which phone do you guys suggest me buying ?
Thank You !
Hi I have the STL100-2 and it works great for me. From the forums here the STL100-1 has a different processor & chip set than the -2 and from the forums it seems that -1 owners have had issues the -2 owners have not. Been rocking mine for over a year and with the new OS update it is like having a new phone again IMO. Enjoy your Z10.. Rocking 24-7 with my Z10 & 16GB PlayBook
Buy whichever the carrier supports
The option that carriers support should be the STL100-1 in your country.
While it is different in terms of hardware, it makes little sense to purchase something that the carrier doesn't support, meaning if something goes wrong, you're toast
Thank you for the reply, Carrier isn't a problem. All Carriers support 4G and I'm buying from Sri Lanka. -3 Version isn't available for the same reason I guess. I want to know which one is more stable hardware wise.
I really like the size of Z10 because I'm used to small phones now
The Leap is a small screen too. If you can wait for it you'd be way happier to not have the Z10 battery hassle. And it will probably run better too.
I'm temporarily running Z10STL100-3/10.3.1.2576 while I wait for a new screen for the Z30. And the Z30 definitely handled 10.3.1 way smoother. But if you need a phone in a hurry then you have no choice but to get the Z10 I guess.
I have a STL100-2 and recently bought a Z30. I read that you prefer Z10 size, but I have to say that the Z30 is a much better device. You will forget about removable batteries and charger bundles.
Anyway, if you go for the Z10, don't get the STL100-1.
MHO. Avoid the Z10. If someone gives it to you for free. By all means take it. Rather buy the Z30. You wont understand why, if you haven't owned or experienced these devices.
I really hate big phones, I need to be able to put it in my pocket easily. And I tend to drop them a lot. Z10 with a rugged case will be just the size. But Z30 with a rugged case is kinda big. And I want to be able to replace the battery, because I have a bad experience with sealed batteries. Price difference between Z10 4G model and Z30 is $80 in Sri Lanka. So it's not a problem, but those few reasons turn me off on the Z30.
STL-100-1 has some serious issues with 10.3. The camera for example doesn't work for me. I'm talking about the official version 10.3. and not leaks etc. The update broke the app. So AVOID. It has a different processor I've heard which is causing issues. Go for 100-2.
Uuhhmmm I have z10 -1 since late 2013..it has and continues to work flawlessly since then..no problems..really a great phone that gets no respect!!!
10-20-15-- just updated the OS to 10.3.2.2639... freakin Z10 -1 runs even better than it did right out the box back in 2013....never have had any of the problems I see on CB Z10 forums...I will be rockin the Z10 til it dies!!!!
Welllll....as the saying goes pride goeth befor a fall...
two weeks after my last post...my beloved Z10 up and died!!
started to randomly lock up requiring a restart....this went on for
a few days then the lockups happened more frequently...then it just
refused to boot up at all...no power light, no nothing...don't know why
but it did start acting up after the update to 10.3.2.2639....so...
had to eat my words and moved up to the LEAP....which personally
think is just a Z10 on growth hormones...It is working like magic...
smooth as silk...even loaded the Google Play have several apps running
from it...so...yeah I still think the Z10 was/is a great phone and a big mistake
for BB to basically make it a bas***d stepchild through active or benign neglect
and/or outright disdain for it bacause it was the former CEO's folly!!!
In any case..made the leap to the LEAP and so far very very happy!!!

Reason: update
I have an STL1 here. I suggest go for STL2, you can choose if you want 4G/LTE or just 3G or 2G on network settings. "Some" STL1 users including me is facing terrible issues with the latest 10.3.1 update.
no, STL100-2 is better by ALL means.
It works perfectly fine with 10.3.1
STL100-1 is the one problemic model, which should be avoided.
I have both models. They both perform the same functions: emails text and calls. Battery calibration issues? It was solved by 10.3.1 os. The only advantage of -2 over -1 is the LTE band. Other than that, they are both identical. Problematic model? It's all in your mind. Both are damned good phones!

No, they are not identical.
CPU:
ARM 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus (MSM8960) (STL100-2 & STL100-3 & STL100-4)
Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 1.5 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 (STL-100-1)
Different battery direction (different placement, with connectors facing bottom on STL100-1 against connectors facing top in STL100-2 & STL100-3 & STL100-4.
while Z10 is really good phone, STL100-2 is better than STL100-1
I have the 100-3. Had typical battery woes prior to 10.3 and I wouldn't have recommended if primarily due to that. Barely got a day out of it. Got the 10.3 update and it's a completely new phone. Battery life went to well over a day with hard use. I would now safely recommend the phone. All the bb10 productivity with now great battery life.
Only a Bluetooth and sometimes WiFi connectivity issue. Bluetooth doesn't like my Toyota system so much as I can only hook up either the phone of the music player, but not both. WiFi still kicks me off my home network occasionally, but not a lot. Would still recommend it.

Do you uae both phones? The"slight" difference in specs won't even be notice when using both for the same functions or tasks.
