Would this is a good idea? It seems it would address the issue of shop salespeople trashing the product, but then it would also cost money - probably way too much right now...thoughts?

Its not worth it at this point, way to costly, and doesn't seem to fit in with the direction of the company.

If the shopfronts are going to be delivering the same kind of service that they gave during the last "special Z10 price", i doubt very much that it would be a good idea, unless they improve considerably the shipment of the items. I ordered mine on Nov. 29 and it was not until last saturday that I received a FedEx tracking number without any delivery date notice. Then just moments ago I finally received one stating that it will be delivered next Monday 16! (By coincidence, the same date that I am leaving home for Christmas and that this Z10 was going to be my present to the person I am going to visit.) If I ever suspected that it was going to be such a delay, I should have done my order in a two day shipment (that would have never occurred anyway!). The shipment is going to be NOT by FedEx but by normal USPS (I guess they call this mis-service "intelligent". Is this a joke?) FedEx gives this kind of shipments to USPS.) My advice, if you ever do any kind of purchase directly to Blackberry -at least here in USA- do it with the fastest delivery you can. I don't think I will ever buy anything else directly from Blackberry, anyway

No, they should not. More expense for no traffic.

I think it is a good idea. Samsung has a strong presence now with its own section in Best Buy. BlackBerry should consider its own section and that will allow customers to learn and play with the devices since it does have a higher learning curve than Samsung. Customer awareness of the OS10 is lacking and this will bring the product directly to the customers. Highlight security, teach side loading, feature the Hub and communication aspects. This will give the brand a fighting chance. This current silence does nothing to the product. And have promo pricing.

Might be tough to get franchisees to sign up for that. Regardless of whether the economics could be made to work, the very idea of setting up retail store fronts goes against the grain of the new CEO's stated intention to re-focus the firm in a different direction.

Most retail is a high volume, low margin business model (unless you're the rare player such as Apple, in which case it's high margin/high volume - the holy grail). Seems to me BlackBerry are headed in the opposite direction.

I thought BlackBerry had them a couple of years ago but closed them all in USA because they barely had 5 customers a day?

Terrible idea. They could use reps in the retail stores though. I ran into one once last year and she gave me a subway giftcard for having a z10.

I would think it would be cheaper to have sales reps visiting stores like Best Buy, Future Shop etc..on a regular basis. Someone who really knows the phones and can show all the features .

They'll need to gain some traction first or they'll have a bunch of empty stores.

Once they start to change public perception and increase share, the stores could help to penetrate even further.

I think the last one to close was in California. Read that more than a year ago.

Maybe if they had 1 store in each state as a franchise... I'd say it would work...

I could see it maybe working with just one store in NYC, Toronto, LA?, London, Paris, etc. Only the biggest cities. That's the only way the population could support the store. If BlackBerry had a tablet it'd help too. They have to sell all their phones, cases, accessories, and offer some sort of tech support, otherwise they wouldn't pull in enough people.

An Apple store has two smartphones, several iPods, two tablets, a bunch of notebooks, sub-notebooks, a set-top box, desktop PC, monitors, routers, Apple branded cases for all that stuff, and a whole slew of selected third party hardware that is made to look like it's an Apple product like Nest thermostats. Soon they will have watches and TVs. That's why they are so crowded all the time. Unless you hate Apple, there's something in there for just about anyone.

What does Blackberry have? A few smartphones? What are they going to put on the shelves to drive traffic.

Cheap phones and you could make money off of selling phone plans... think of it as a cell store that sells all the carriers
