Quick question, if I install one of the leaks and then, later, decide to go back to my original
OS using Link, does procedure basically wipe the phone, so I would have to reload everything
(apps, settings, etc.) again ?

You got that one right. And your backups would probably not be backwards compatible.

Wipe is correct so apps and settings are lost. So far if you are not going from 10.2 back to a lower OS backups seem to be OK. From 10.2 will require some extra steps

I have tried several leaks...and some of the apps/data from the latest
versions give an error/incompatible OS message if I tryto reload back ups
when I go back to earlier OS. I saved an "early" backup to deal with that.

If I do a backup "before" any leak installation, then, later, decide to go back to the original
OS version (the one that I'm using now and would do the backup with), I assume the restore
should work ok, since I would be restoring a backup made with the version that I restored .

That works... unless your carrier rolls out a new version that is closer to the leak than the OS you had ar the time of the backup. *facepalm*
