What is the vertical red line to the left of the calendar color of busy/free/tentative and the appointment description itself? Seemingly just attached to the first two or three appointments listed in the day view.

Most likely indicates an all day event.

If you are referring to the red line at the edge on the left in the daily agenda view, it indicates the present time. Anything after it is in the future, and before is the past.
You can see it as a horizontal line in the week view.
I get a red line when I have a conflict of time. An appointment from 8-9 and then another from 845-930 the red line is there

...thanks all for the quick reply.
If it reflects conflicts maybe useful for some but for me who lists birthdays as an all day event guess it will then always be there on all entries for that day. As we know birthdays in contacts is a waste as I would think the calendar is the more accessible place to note it.
