The charger you are using ugh not be the correct one. It may charge but slowly as it does not have the correct amount of juice

You need a better charger.

You cannot just use anything with a micro-USB plug. It needs to be a quality device with a high output - at least ~800ma at 5v, and preferably higher.

I recommend installing the Battery Guru app from BlackBerry World, which makes it very easy to see how much power your charger is actually delivering to the device.

My old Z10 used to do this when I had it hooked up to the charger (the OEM one that came with it) while I was using mobile hotspot. I thought it had something to do with the device over heating a little.

I don't know, never owned one.

If so, then I would look at battery drain issues. IE if location services (GPS) were on while simultaneously watching videos continuously, it might be hard to keep the device charging.

If you have Battery Guru installed, you can get an idea of charger capacity by letting it sit idle with the screen off for a while, while connected to the charger and the device is under ~70% charge, and see what BG reports for incoming "positive" wattage.

It should be at least 3 watts for a good charger, as much as 4 watts for a powerful charger if the device is not draining a lot on its own. (These are numbers that I get on my Z10s - Z30/Q10/Q5 will probably vary due to different batteries and screens)

Idle power drain ideally should be under 0.1watt. And the reason you want to check the charging power when the device is under ~70% charge is the charging circuitry starts tapering the charging power as the charge level increases.

I experience that sometimes when the plug was moved a bit. The fix is to make sure the plug is connected properly on both phone and on the outlet too by removing the plug and reinserting it again.

And not to sound like a broken record, but that is another great use-case for Battery Guru.

Once you've used it for a while you will start to learn things like how dramatic a difference it makes to use a good USB cable, compared to one you thought was good, but actually stinks.

It got me out of the habit of using retractable Micro-USB cables for charging. The conductors are just too small to carry enough amperage to take full advantage of a good charger.

First of all, thanks for installing Battery Guru, that will definitely help. Please leave it open in the background so you can see the charging/discharging status over time.

Based on what you've posted, you are getting good charge from whichever charger was in use when you took the Battery Guru screenshots. In fact, the originally-mentioned problem would not be occurring in that case.

However, looking at the historical Device Monitor graphs, it seems like, on average, you are getting very high power drain from the display, as if it is on continuously and set to high brightness.

If you go to the 24 or 48 hour battery view and press on "Display", you will see a grqph indicating periods of high and low battery usage over time for the display. This should help determine if continuous display usage is the culprit.

Are you using some app that prevents the display from going into power saving mode, and leaving that app running continuously?

I just looked at the graph again and see that despite a 4.68 watt charge Battery Guru claims it will take 61 hours to charge the battery.

Something is funky here. Are you not using the original BlackBerry battery?

I have the same issues with my official 1.8a blackberry car charger.

I occasionally get the same message with my wall charger.

I usually unplug it and plug in again a couple times and it works no problem.


Thought this was just an issue with my z10, but the problem has moved with me to the z30

Just for kicks: Turn off all connections (Airplane Mode). Close all active frames. Then try charging again.

I had a similar charger that I bought from the Dollarstore that made my Android device and BlackBerry behave in a similar way when I plugged into it. In the end, it just wasn't providing the advertised current.
