As the heading suggests my phone doesn't play mkv format files. Though it starts playing at first, but if it is fast forwarded it stops playing. What may be the reason?

MKV is a package container for media tracks.
It can contain the encoded video, audio, and others (others as in subtitles, CC, and such) tracks.
MKV in itself is not an media encoding. The encoding is performed on the individual track by use of codecs.
The codecs are what really matter in a devices or players ability to play back a file.

That said, these are the support codecs for a Z10 and its native media player:

If the MKV you are trying to play is not encoded with a supported codec, then the player will have issues.

One way around this is to use a third party media player, that has built in support for more codecs.

I was going to suggest VLC player. I've always used this on the desktop and also installed it on my Blackberry. I can't remember if it was loaded via SNAP or Amazon, but do a search and you shall find it.
