When I place a call it shows my number as an unknown number. I've tried the following:

Phone Settings > Show My Number > On

Settings > Security > SIM > My # is grayed out, can't edit anything.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Hang on gonna edit post with link in a moment.
The below post might be right bit try dialling *31# before the number. This forces the gsm network to show your number.

It is also odd that you cannot enter your number as it is greyed out.

If it persists, contact your carrier as something is off with the sim and/or their internal settings for you.

I read a nice article about that some time ago but cannot find it....

It shows it as unknown to the person you're calling? If that's the case then maybe that person doesn't have caller ID.

It shows unknown when dialing out (when displaying my number), and also if I open the dialer application where it shows my recent call history and scroll up, it doesn't show a phone number for my BlackBerry.

Maybe you have an unlisted number?

Sometimes sim cards do not support My Number, I've had this issue on iPhone.
You need to change the sim card to edit my number

This problem has occurred. Pretty easy to fix. You have to call your carrier and let them know you need your phone number pushed to the SIM card, they'll know what to do.

I had the same problem as OP. What TronicsCity posted was the only thing that worked for me. Got my Q10 a year now and a few months ago my own number was shown as "Unknown", it didn't before. When you change the option to call anonymously, it might happen that when you change it back to "show own number" that it buggs. In real life it does show your number but on your display it shows unknown number.
    Anyway, TronicsCity's tip works fine.

When I got my z30, went from sprint to T-Mobile, THEY asked me, do you want your number blocked? I said yes.........also check with your carrier
